Company profile

SEVEN & I HOLDINGS CO LTD

Updated

Overview

Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese retail group centered on the 7-Eleven convenience-store business. Its principal markets include Japan and North America, where its store network serves customers through company-operated and franchised locations. The group has also operated superstores and financial-services businesses.[1]

The company’s corporate creed emphasizes earning the trust of customers, business partners, shareholders, local communities and employees. For the fiscal year ended February 2025, it reported ¥10.43 trillion in revenues from operations, indicating the scale of its retail and franchise activities.[4][5] [1]

Products & services

Seven & i’s convenience stores sell prepared foods, drinks and everyday merchandise, including private-brand products. In Japan, its named offerings include SEVEN CAFÉ Bakery and SEVEN CAFÉ Tea, alongside freshly prepared counter items. The group also markets products under the Seven Premium brand, while Seven-Eleven Japan lists individual food and other store products by category.[6]

In the United States, 7-Eleven’s named products include Slurpee frozen drinks, Big Gulp fountain drinks and 7-Select private-brand merchandise. Its services include 7NOW delivery, 7Rewards and fuel sales. The company reported $979 million in U.S. 7NOW sales in its fiscal year ended February 2025; that figure is a sales amount, not a percentage of total performance.[9] [6]

Geographic presence

Seven & i Holdings’ convenience-store operations are concentrated in Japan and North America. The company describes its combined convenience-store network in those markets as serving approximately 30 million customers daily. Its group sales measure also includes franchisee sales from 7-Eleven Stores Pty Ltd. in Australia.[16][17]

In the fiscal year ended February 2025, overseas convenience-store operations generated ¥8,556.8 billion in revenues from operations, compared with ¥914.5 billion for domestic convenience-store operations—approximately 82% and 9%, respectively, of consolidated revenues. These are business-segment figures, not a complete country-by-country revenue breakdown; the overseas figure is not reported as North America alone.[18] [16]

Business segments

Seven & i’s reported segments for the fiscal year ended February 2025 were Domestic Convenience Store Operations, Overseas Convenience Store Operations, Superstore Operations, Financial Services and Others. The first two distinguish its convenience-store businesses in Japan from those outside Japan. Superstore Operations covered its larger-format retail business, while Financial Services was a separately reported business; Others comprised activities outside those principal categories.[3]

Overseas convenience stores generated approximately 82% of consolidated revenue, domestic convenience stores 9%, superstores 7%, financial services 1% and Others 2%. These rounded shares are calculated before the effect of eliminations and corporate adjustments, so they do not sum precisely to 100%. The convenience-store businesses together accounted for about 91% of consolidated revenue. The five-segment breakdown describes that fiscal year rather than a permanent structure: Seven & i subsequently reported the deconsolidation of York Holdings and Seven Bank.[3][19] [3][19]

Company history

Seven & i Holdings traces its roots to an Ito family clothing store opened in Tokyo in 1920. Ito-Yokado was established in 1958 and expanded into convenience stores after forming a licensing relationship with the U.S. operator of 7-Eleven in 1973. Japan’s first 7-Eleven opened in Tokyo in 1974. In 1991, Ito-Yokado and Seven-Eleven Japan acquired a controlling interest in Southland Corporation, the U.S. operator of 7-Eleven.[20]

Seven & i Holdings was established in 2005 as the holding company for the group’s businesses. It expanded its U.S. convenience-store operations through the acquisition of approximately 1,030 Sunoco stores in 2018 and Speedway in 2021. The group sold its Sogo & Seibu department-store business in 2023.[20] [20]
