Overview

Service Corporation International (SCI) is a North American deathcare provider. Its core business is operating funeral homes and cemeteries and providing funeral, cremation, cemetery, and related merchandise and services. SCI describes its purpose as supporting families through difficult times, celebrating lives, and preserving memories.[1]

As of June 30, 2026, SCI reported 1,495 funeral service locations and 505 cemeteries across 44 U.S. states, eight Canadian provinces, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.[2] Its 2025 customer revenue was $4.309 billion, and the company describes its workforce as approximately 24,000 associates.[3][4] SCI traces its beginnings to a Houston funeral home founded by Robert L. Waltrip in 1962.[5] [3]

Products & services

Service Corporation International offers funeral, cremation and cemetery products and services. Funeral services include arranging and directing ceremonies, facility and vehicle use, removal and preparation of the deceased, embalming and cremation, memorialization, travel protection and catering. Merchandise includes burial caskets and accessories, urns and other cremation receptacles, outer burial containers, flowers, stationery, online and video tributes, and memorialization products.[6]

The company provides personalized funeral options such as celebration-of-life ceremonies, customized digital presentations of merchandise and services, catering and celebrant services. Cremation packages may include memorialization, and the cremation service can extend from initial family contact through return of the ashes. Cemetery offerings include burial property, private family estates with custom architectural features, landscaped hedge estates, specialized graveside services, glass-front cremation niches and cremation gardens.[7] Preneed merchandise and service contracts may be funded through insurance or trusts.[10][11]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, SCI reported $1,235.4 million in funeral revenue and $964.4 million in cemetery revenue, out of $2,199.7 million in total revenue from customers. The company did not report these categories as percentages of total revenue; its reported 64.7% comparable cremation rate is a service-mix measure, not a revenue share.[12][13] [6]

Geographic presence

Service Corporation International operates funeral-service locations and cemeteries in the United States and Canada, with a footprint across 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and eight Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.[14] At December 31, 2025, it reported 1,485 funeral-service locations and 500 cemeteries.[17]

The company’s filings do not disclose revenue by country or region.[18] [14]

Percentages are calculated from reported segment revenue of $4,309.234 million.[19] [19]

Company history

Service Corporation International (SCI) was founded in Houston in 1962 by Robert L. Waltrip, beginning with a family-operated funeral home and a shared-services approach to serving funeral homes. In 1993, it began expanding internationally through acquisitions.[20][5]

Following acquisition competition in the late 1990s, SCI reduced its acquisition activity and divested international businesses and many North American locations. In 1999, it introduced Dignity Memorial as a transcontinental deathcare brand.[21] In 2005, Thomas L. Ryan succeeded Waltrip as chief executive officer.[22][23]

SCI resumed major acquisition-led expansion in the 2000s and early 2010s, acquiring Alderwoods in 2006, Keystone North America in 2010, a 70% interest in The Neptune Society in 2011, and Stewart Enterprises in 2013.[24] Ryan became chairman in 2016.[22]
