SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING INTERNATIONAL CORP (A)

Updated

Overview

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) is a semiconductor foundry that manufactures integrated circuits for customers using 8-inch and 12-inch wafers. Its services also include design support, intellectual-property support and photomask manufacturing. Its technology platforms serve applications including logic, power and analog chips, display drivers, memory, radio-frequency chips and image sensors.[1]

Founded in 2000, SMIC has its principal manufacturing operations in mainland China and customer-service teams in China, the United States, Europe and Japan. It describes its mission in terms of creating value for customers, returns for shareholders, opportunities for employees and contributions to society. Revenue was approximately US$9.33 billion in 2025.[4] [1]

Products & services

SMIC supplies foundry services on 8-inch and 12-inch wafers. Its mass-production technology platforms cover logic ICs, power and analog chips, high-voltage display drivers, embedded and other non-volatile memory, mixed-signal and radio-frequency (RF) chips, and CMOS image sensors. These platforms support chips used in phones, computers, consumer electronics, connected devices, industrial equipment and vehicles.[9]

Specific offerings include a 28nm ultra-low-leakage platform with customer products in mass production, a 65nm RF silicon-on-insulator platform used for smartphone and Wi-Fi front-end chips, and a 55nm high-voltage platform for LCD and OLED display-driver chips. Its bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) platforms target power-management, motor-driver and automotive chips; these include an 8-inch low-voltage BCD platform in mass production and a 90nm platform under further development. SMIC has also developed a 0.18µm embedded non-volatile-memory platform for industrial and automotive applications. Development and production status varies by platform.[10] Alongside wafer fabrication, SMIC offers design services, intellectual-property support and photomask manufacturing.[11] [9]

Geographic presence

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation’s principal office is in Shanghai, while the company is registered in the Cayman Islands. Its semiconductor-manufacturing subsidiaries include operations in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Shenzhen. The company also reports marketing offices in the United States, Europe, Japan and Taiwan.[12]

China is its largest reported sales region, accounting for 84.6% of 2024 revenue, or US$6.80 billion. America accounted for 12.4% (US$0.99 billion), and Eurasia for 3.0% (US$0.24 billion). These are the company’s reported regional categories; the disclosure does not separately identify revenue from individual countries.[15][16] [12]

Business segments

SMIC reports one operating segment, principally the manufacture and sale of integrated circuits; it does not identify separate reportable business segments. Its revenue breakdown by type of goods or services shows that wafers accounted for approximately 94.3% of 2025 revenue, while masks, testing and others accounted for approximately 5.7%. These are revenue categories, not separate operating segments.[17]

SMIC also reports its wafer-sales mix by application. In 2025, consumer electronics accounted for 43%, smartphones 23%, computers and tablets 15%, industrial and automotive 11%, and connectivity and IoT 8%. By wafer size, 12-inch wafers accounted for 77% of wafer sales and 8-inch wafers for 23%. These percentages describe wafer sales rather than distinct business segments.[20] [17]

Company history

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) was founded in Shanghai in 2000 by Richard Chang. It listed on the Hong Kong and New York stock exchanges in 2004, establishing a public-market presence as it expanded its semiconductor foundry operations.[24]

SMIC began mass production of 28-nanometre chips in 2016 and acquired a majority stake in Italy’s LFoundry that year. Zhao Haijun and Liang Mong Song became co-chief executives in 2017. In 2019, SMIC began mass production of its first-generation 14-nanometre process; in July 2020, it listed shares on Shanghai’s STAR Market.[25] [25]
