Overview

Sartorius AG is a life-sciences technology supplier focused on biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing. Its Bioprocess Solutions business provides technologies used across the production process, including bioreactors, cell-culture media, separation and purification systems, and process analysis; its Lab Products & Services business supplies laboratory products and services. Its portfolio supports areas such as biologics, vaccines, and cell and gene therapies.[1]

Founded in Göttingen, Germany, in 1870, Sartorius states its purpose as “Better Health for More People” and describes its mission as helping biopharma customers accelerate drug development and improve manufacturing efficiency.[4][5] The company reported 2025 sales of €3,538.1 million and 14,042 employees at year-end, with more than 60 locations worldwide and operations in over 35 countries.[6] [1]

Products & services

Sartorius’s Bioprocess Solutions portfolio spans biologics development and production, including cell lines, cell-culture media and reagents, bioreactors, filtration and other separation, purification and concentration technologies, and products for storage and transport. It also includes software for analysing, modelling and optimising development and production processes. Applications include monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, antibody-drug conjugates, and cell and gene therapies. Sterile single-use products account for just over three-quarters of Bioprocess Solutions sales.[1]

Lab Products & Services supplies research and quality-control instruments and consumables, including bioanalytics systems, tailored reagents and advanced cell models. Its bioanalytics systems automate analytical steps in molecule, cell-line and process development and represent approximately one-third of the division’s sales. Product areas include protein analysis, cell selection, high-throughput cytometry, live-cell analysis, media and reagents, weighing, filtration, liquid handling, microbial quality control and laboratory water. Named offerings include CellCelector CLD, an automated imaging and cell-isolation platform for identifying and documenting cell clones, and the Eveo Cell Therapy Platform, which integrates raw materials, production equipment, software and quality-control assays in a closed, automated system.[11] [1]

Geographic presence

Sartorius has a worldwide network of around 60 production and sales locations. Its identified operating locations include Göttingen, Germany (R&D and membrane and filter production); Aubagne and Illkirch, France (manufacturing and R&D activities); and Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA (research laboratories and process-development services). These examples are not a complete site inventory.[15]

In FY2025, Sartorius reported revenue of €3,538.1 million: €1,466.6 million from EMEA (41.5%), €1,251.4 million from the Americas (35.4%), and €820.1 million from Asia Pacific (23.2%). Among individual countries, the United States generated €1,161.1 million (32.8% of group revenue), China €235.1 million (6.6%), and Germany €314.3 million (8.9%). Percentages are calculated from the reported amounts.[20]

At year-end 2025, the company had 14,042 employees: 9,410 in EMEA, 2,577 in the Americas, and 2,055 in APAC. In Q1 2026, regional revenue was €392.4 million in EMEA, €307.9 million in the Americas, and €198.9 million in Asia Pacific.[21][22] [20]

Business segments

For FY2025, Sartorius reported two operating segments. **Bioprocess Solutions** supplies solutions for biopharmaceutical production and process development, including bioreactors, filtration, and liquid transport and storage, as well as chromatography and advanced-therapy solutions. Revenue was €2,865.0 million, approximately 81.0% of consolidated revenue of €3,538.1 million.[9]

**Lab Products & Services** provides laboratory instruments such as balances, pipettes and lab water systems, and consumables including filters and microbiological test kits, for biopharma, quality-control, chemical and food-industry laboratories. Revenue was €673.0 million, approximately 19.0% of consolidated revenue.[9]

The company also discloses revenue by geography: EMEA €1,466.6 million (about 41.5%), Americas €1,251.4 million (35.4%) and Asia/Pacific €820.1 million (23.2%). This is a supplementary geographic view; the reported operating segments are the two divisions above.[25][26] [9]

Company history

Sartorius was founded in Göttingen in 1870, when Florenz Sartorius opened a precision-engineering workshop that initially made precision balances. The company became Sartorius-Werke AG in 1914. Its filtration roots date to 1927, when Richard Zsigmondy, Wilhelm Sartorius and other industrialists founded Membranfiltergesellschaft; Sartorius acquired full ownership in 1938 and integrated the membrane-filter operation in 1978.[4]

From the 1950s onward, Sartorius developed electronic balances and industrial filtration equipment, shifting from mechanical to electronic weighing in the 1970s. It opened its first overseas production facility in Puerto Rico in 1983. Sartorius went public in 1990, ending its long period as a family-run business; by 2002, biotechnology sales had overtaken Mechatronics for the first time.[30]

In 2007, Sartorius combined its Biotechnology Division with a majority stake in Stedim to form Sartorius Stedim Biotech, focused on biopharmaceuticals. Subsequent acquisitions broadened its biotechnology, bioanalytics and bioprocessing capabilities, including Essen BioScience and Umetrics in 2017 and businesses in separation, cell culture and gene-therapy-related technologies from 2020 to 2023.[33]

Michael Grosse succeeded Joachim Kreuzburg as CEO on July 1, 2025. That year Sartorius completed its acquisition of MatTek, including Visikol, adding 3D human-cell microtissue models to its portfolio.[36][37] [4]
