Overview
Saia, Inc. is a U.S. transportation company whose core business is less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carriage; LTL shipments generate about 97% of its revenue. It also provides time-definite and expedited LTL services, along with truckload brokerage and other logistics services.[1][2] Founded in 1924, Saia serves the 48 contiguous U.S. states directly and reaches Canada and Mexico through third-party interline carriers. It operated 213 owned and leased terminals at year-end 2025.[3][4]
Saia describes its mission as “safely driv[ing] our customers’ success with custom solutions.” The company reported FY2025 operating revenue of approximately $3.23 billion, and its company overview lists more than 14,500 employees.[5][6][7] [1][2][3][4][6][7][5]
Products & services
Saia’s principal service is less-than-truckload (LTL) freight, which accounted for approximately 97% of revenue. Saia LTL Freight primarily handles shipments weighing 100–10,000 pounds and serves the contiguous 48 states directly, with service to Canada and Mexico through third-party interline relationships. Its LTL offerings include time-definite and expedited transportation.[8][3]
Additional offerings include brokered truckload, expedited transportation, and other logistics services. Named services include Saia Guaranteed, with delivery targets of 10 a.m., noon, or 5 p.m. on the standard delivery day; Custom Solutions, including expedited, after-hours, and select-time delivery; and Protect From Freezing Service.[8][9][10][11] Saia also offers cross-border LTL services to Mexico and Canada, trade-show shipping, and distribution and consolidation services, including vendor pickups, distribution-center delivery, and on-demand warehousing.[12][13][14][15] Online tools support shipment tracking, rate quotes, electronic bills of lading, pickup scheduling, and access to shipment documents.[16] [8][3][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
Geographic presence
Saia’s direct less-than-truckload service covers the 48 contiguous United States. It also serves Canada and Mexico through third-party interline carriers. The company describes its revenue as primarily U.S.-derived, but does not disclose revenue by country, state, or region.[3][17]
At December 31, 2025, Saia operated 213 terminals, three general offices, and one warehouse; its headquarters are in Johns Creek, Georgia.[4][1] The company’s current overview lists 218 terminals, and 2026 announcements identify new facilities in Marysville, Washington; Edinburgh, Indiana; Duluth, Minnesota; and Columbia, Missouri.[5][18][19] Employee distribution by geography was not disclosed in the reviewed filings. [3][17][4][1][5][18][19]
Business segments
Saia reports one operating and reportable segment: transportation services. It manages the business through an integrated network and reviews segment performance on a consolidated basis; it does not report LTL, truckload, expedited, or logistics services as separate segments. The latest available 2026 quarterly filing also confirms a single reportable segment.[17][20][21]
The segment’s core business is less-than-truckload (LTL) freight transportation, with time-definite and expedited options; Saia also provides brokered truckload, expedited transportation, and other logistics services. In FY2025, approximately 97% of revenue came from transporting LTL shipments across the United States. Other value-added services therefore account for roughly the remaining 3% by subtraction, but Saia does not disclose a separate revenue breakdown for those services.[3][22] [17][20][21][3][22]
Company history
Louis Saia Sr. founded the family trucking business in Houma, Louisiana, in 1924; its early deliveries were made using the family car.[23][24] The Saia family sold the company to Preston Trucking in 1987, and Yellow Corporation acquired Preston, including Saia, in 1993.[5]
In 2002, Yellow spun off Saia and Jevic Transportation as SCS Transportation, an independent publicly traded company.[5] SCS acquired Clark Bros. Transfer in 2004, extending Saia’s reach in the Midwest.[5][25] In 2006, SCS sold Jevic and Saia began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker SAIA; that year Saia also acquired The Connection Company, expanding its LTL network in the Midwest.[5][26][27]
Frederick J. Holzgrefe III became president and CEO in April 2020, after serving as president and COO from January 2019.[28] In January 2024, Saia completed its purchase of 17 terminals from Yellow, a major network expansion.[29] [23][28][24][5][25][26][27][29]
