RWE AG

Overview

RWE AG is a German energy company headquartered in Essen. It generates and trades electricity from renewable and conventional sources, with activities spanning offshore and onshore wind, solar power, battery storage and flexible generation. It also develops green hydrogen projects. Its operations extend across Europe and into markets including the United States and Australia.[1][2]

RWE describes its purpose as “Our energy for a sustainable life” and aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. In 2024, it reported approximately €24.2 billion in revenue and 20,985 full-time-equivalent employees.[3][4] [P131817443][T15072801][T15072801][W1][W2][https://www.rwe.com/en/the-group/rwe-ag/][https://www.rwe.com/en/the-group/countries-and-locations/][https://www.rwe.com/-/media/RWE/documents/05-investor-relations/finanzkalendar-und-veroeffentlichungen/2024-gj/2025-03-20-rwe-annual-report-2024.pdf]

Products & services

RWE’s principal product is electricity generated from offshore and onshore wind, solar, hydro, biomass and gas-fired plants. Its generation portfolio also includes pumped-storage and battery facilities that can store electricity and help balance supply and demand. At year-end 2024, RWE reported installed capacity of 3,515 MW in offshore wind, 15,179 MW in its Onshore Wind / Solar segment and 19,098 MW in Flexible Generation; the latter includes gas-fired generation and storage.[4]

Through RWE Supply & Trading, the company supplies and trades electricity, pipeline gas and LNG, and offers customers price hedging, portfolio management and access to energy markets. Its renewable-energy services include long-term power purchase agreements, guarantees of origin and direct marketing of wind and solar output. It also markets flexibility from controllable generation and electricity-consuming assets, and offers green hydrogen produced by electrolysis as an emerging energy product.[6] In 2024, Supply & Trading accounted for approximately 78% of reported external revenue; this revenue share reflects trading activity and is not a measure of the share of electricity RWE generated.[4] [4]

Geographic presence

RWE AG is headquartered in Essen, Germany. Its principal European power-generation markets are Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands; it also has substantial renewable-generation capacity in the United States. Its renewable assets extend across other European countries and Australia, while its flexible-generation assets include gas-fired capacity in Türkiye.[10]

In 2024, Germany accounted for €11.2 billion, or about 46%, of RWE’s €24.2 billion in external revenue. The UK contributed €5.3 billion (22%), the rest of Europe €5.8 billion (24%), North America €1.6 billion (6%) and other regions €0.3 billion (1%). Revenue is assigned to the region where the service was provided. At year-end 2024, RWE had 22,098 employees: 14,470 in Germany, 3,197 in the UK and 4,431 in other countries.[14] [12]

Business segments

RWE reports four core-business segments and one non-core segment. Offshore Wind develops and operates offshore wind farms, while Onshore Wind/Solar combines onshore wind, solar and some battery-storage activities across the Americas, Europe and Australia. Flexible Generation includes gas-fired, hydro, pumped-storage and biomass plants, certain batteries, and related engineering activities. Supply & Trading trades electricity, gas, LNG and other energy commodities and supports fuel procurement and power-plant dispatch. The non-core Phaseout Technologies segment covers lignite mining and generation in Germany’s Rhenish region and the dismantling of decommissioned nuclear plants.[17]

Based on 2025 external revenue excluding natural-gas and electricity taxes, Supply & Trading accounted for approximately 68% of group revenue; Onshore Wind/Solar 15%; Flexible Generation 7%; Offshore Wind 6%; and Phaseout Technologies 4%. Revenue is therefore concentrated in trading, but earnings have a different mix: Offshore Wind, Onshore Wind/Solar and Flexible Generation contributed approximately 29%, 34% and 28%, respectively, of the group’s €5.1 billion adjusted EBITDA, versus approximately 7% from Supply & Trading; other and consolidation items account for the remainder. RWE manages Phaseout Technologies using adjusted cash flow rather than adjusted EBITDA.[22] [17]

Company history

RWE was founded in Essen on 25 April 1898 as Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk, an electricity supplier. Hugo Stinnes acquired a majority stake in 1902 and helped expand the business beyond its local origins. In 1928, RWE built a cross-regional high-voltage transmission line, a milestone in its development as a large-scale power utility. Its generation activities later expanded into nuclear power: the Biblis A reactor connected to the grid in 1974.[25]

RWE merged with German utility VEW in 2000. It subsequently expanded into water through its acquisition of Thames Water, but sold that business in 2006 as it refocused on energy. In 2016, RWE listed innogy, which held its networks, retail and renewables businesses. A restructuring agreed with E.ON in 2018 and completed in 2020 transferred innogy’s customer and network businesses to E.ON while bringing renewable-generation assets into RWE.[29] [25]
