Company history
RPM International traces its origins to May 1947, when Frank C. Sullivan founded Republic Powdered Metals. Its first product was Alumanation, an aluminum roof coating. The company made its first acquisition, The Reardon Company, in 1966; after Sullivan’s death in 1971, his son Tom took over, RPM, Inc. was formed, and the company began pursuing a more aggressive acquisition strategy.[38][39]
From the 1980s through the 1990s, RPM expanded into construction chemicals, consumer coatings and building products through acquisitions including Euclid Chemical (1984), Rust-Oleum (1991 and 1994), Tremco (1997) and DAP Products (1999). The Tremco acquisition helped establish RPM’s Construction Products Group. In 2002, Frank C. Sullivan became CEO, and he became chairman in 2008.[38][40]
RPM announced its MAP to Growth improvement program in 2018. More recently, it agreed to acquire UK-based Star Brands Group, maker of The Pink Stuff, in 2025; in 2026, it completed the acquisition of Kalzip for its Construction Products Group.[38][41][42][43][44] [39][40][38][41][42][43][44]
