Royal Bank of Canada’s current reportable segments, following changes effective in Q4 2024, are Personal Banking, Commercial Banking, Wealth Management, Insurance, Capital Markets, and Corporate Support; RBC states that it split the former Personal & Commercial Banking segment into separate Personal Banking and Commercial Banking segments, and moved RBC Direct Investing into Wealth Management.[54][55] Personal Banking provides a broad suite of financial products and services to retail clients in Canada, the Caribbean and the U.S., while Commercial Banking provides lending, deposit and transaction banking products and services to Canadian companies and foreign businesses operating in Canada.[2][38] Wealth Management primarily serves affluent, high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients globally, and also includes self-directed investing in Canada, global asset management products, and Canadian asset and investor services.[27] Insurance offers life, health, wealth, property and casualty, travel, group benefits, longevity reinsurance and reinsurance solutions.[56] Capital Markets provides advisory and origination, sales and trading, lending and financing, and transaction banking services to corporate, institutional, asset manager, private equity and government clients globally.[57]

Company history

Royal Bank of Canada traces its roots to 1864, when the Merchants Bank began operations on the Halifax waterfront in Nova Scotia. It received a government charter in 1869 as the Merchants’ Bank of Halifax, and in 1901 it adopted the name Royal Bank of Canada. Over the following decades, the bank expanded beyond Canada; RBC’s history materials note that by 1925 it had developed an international presence in the Caribbean, South America and Europe.[63][64]

RBC’s modern transformation accelerated in the late 20th century through a series of strategic acquisitions. Its history page identifies Dominion Securities in 1988, and Royal Trust and Voyageur Insurance Company in 1993, as important steps in its evolution from a retail bank into a broader financial services provider; the bank later launched the unified RBC brand in 2001. In the 21st century, major expansion milestones included the acquisition of City National Corporation in 2015 and Brewin Dolphin Holdings in 2022. In 2024, RBC completed the acquisition of HSBC Bank Canada, which it described as the largest acquisition in its history.[65] [67]
