Overview
Resona Holdings, Inc. is the holding company of a Japanese banking group whose principal banks are Resona Bank, Saitama Resona Bank, Kansai Mirai Bank and Minato Bank. The group provides banking services, while Resona Bank also conducts trust banking. Its main markets are the Tokyo and Saitama metropolitan areas and the Kansai region, particularly Osaka.[1][2]
The group’s stated aim is to contribute to local communities by providing services to local customers. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, it reported consolidated total income of ¥1.13 trillion.[3][4] [1][2][3][4]
Products & services
Resona Holdings’ products for individual customers include housing loans, investment trusts, insurance and fund-wrap services. Its asset-management and trust offerings also generate fees from securities trusts and assets managed by Resona Asset Management. In the fiscal year ended March 2025, asset-management-related services produced ¥56.5 billion in fee income, about 25% of the group’s ¥227.9 billion total fee income.[5][6]
For businesses and their owners, the group offers corporate lending, private-placement bonds, commitment lines and syndicated loans, alongside asset and business succession trusts, M&A advice, real-estate services and pension trusts. Payment and account services include domestic transfers, account transfers, electronic banking and debit cards. Settlement-related services were its largest disclosed fee-income category in the fiscal year ended March 2025, at ¥78.3 billion, or about 34% of total fee income; corporate solutions contributed ¥31.9 billion and succession-related services ¥29.5 billion. These percentages describe fee income, not total company revenue.[5][7][6] [5][6][7]
Geographic presence
Resona Holdings is headquartered in Koto-ku, Tokyo. Its principal operating areas are the Tokyo and Saitama metropolitan areas and the Kansai region, particularly Osaka. The group’s banking subsidiaries include Resona Bank, Saitama Resona Bank, Kansai Mirai Bank and Minato Bank.[8][2][9]
Japan accounts for more than 90% of the group’s ordinary income and tangible fixed assets. Resona does not present a further geographic segment breakdown, so a country-by-country revenue split is not available from that disclosure.[10] [2][9][10][8]
Business segments
Resona Holdings reports three business-line segments: Consumer banking, Corporate banking and Market trading. Consumer banking serves mainly individuals through consumer loans and advice on asset management and succession. Corporate banking serves mainly companies through lending, trust-asset management, real estate, corporate pension and succession services. Market trading undertakes short-term lending and borrowing, bond transactions and derivatives trading in financial markets.[11][12]
For the fiscal year ended March 2025, Consumer banking generated ¥356.2 billion in gross operating profit, or approximately 51% of the consolidated total; Corporate banking generated ¥457.9 billion, or 66%; and Market trading recorded a ¥114.7 billion loss, or −17%. An ¥7.3 billion loss in “Other,” which includes functions outside the operating segments, reconciles these figures to consolidated gross operating profit of ¥692.1 billion. The percentages do not sum to 100% across the three segments because Market trading and Other contributed losses. Market trading’s reported loss includes the effect of an internal transfer-pricing change.[13][14][15] [11][12][13][14][15]
Company history
Resona Holdings traces its origins to Daiwa Bank Holdings, established in 2001 as a holding company for a Japanese banking group. It was renamed Resona Holdings, and in 2003 Daiwa Bank and Asahi Bank were combined to form Resona Bank. The group received a major injection of public funds that year.[16]
Resona completed repayment of public funds in 2015. In 2018, it expanded its regional banking group through Kansai Mirai Financial Group: share exchanges bringing Kansai Urban Bank and Minato Bank under Kansai Mirai took effect on April 1, and Kansai Mirai was included in Resona’s consolidated group.[17][18][19] [17][18][19][16]
