Company history

Reinsurance Group of America traces its origins to General American Life Insurance Company’s life-reinsurance business, established in 1973. It became a publicly traded company through an initial public offering in 1993, while still connected to General American.[20]

MetLife acquired GenAmerica, RGA’s parent, in 2000. RGA completed a recapitalization and split-off from MetLife in 2008, ending MetLife’s majority ownership. In 2009–2010, it expanded into group life, accident and health reinsurance by acquiring ING’s U.S. and Canadian group-reinsurance business.[23]

RGA opened its first Middle East office, in Dubai, in 2011. It agreed to acquire Aurora National Life Assurance Company in 2014, completing the acquisition in 2015. In leadership, Anna Manning became CEO in 2017, succeeding Greig Woodring; Tony Cheng became president in 2023 and succeeded Manning as CEO in 2024.[27] [20]
