Overview
QuantumScape Corp. develops solid-state lithium-metal battery technology, primarily for electric vehicles, with a stated mission “to revolutionize energy storage to enable a sustainable future.” Its technology centers on a proprietary ceramic solid-state electrolyte separator; QSE-5 is its targeted first commercial battery product. Founded in 2010, the company remains focused on development, customer sampling, and scaling production rather than established commercial cell sales.[1][2][3]
The company is headquartered in San Jose, California, where it has offices, research and engineering operations, and a pilot line. Its automotive customer and partner activity spans North America, Europe, and Japan, including work with Volkswagen’s PowerCo. QuantumScape reported approximately 700 employees at the end of 2025; in its latest available 2026 quarterly filing, it said its operating segment had not yet derived revenue from business activities.[4][5][6][7][8] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
Products & services
QuantumScape’s principal named cell product is QSE-5, a solid-state lithium-metal battery cell designed for automotive applications. It is anode-free as manufactured: lithium from the cathode forms the metal anode during the first charge. The company describes its cell format as combining pouch and prismatic features, with design considerations for lithium-metal expansion, heat dissipation during fast charging, operation with or without external pressure, and pack integration. Cell dimensions and layer count can vary with customer requirements.[3][9]
In 2026, QuantumScape reported QSE-5 B-sample energy density above 800 Wh/L and charging from 10% to 80% in under 15 minutes. The company’s 2024 B-sample results included 844 Wh/L, 301 Wh/kg and a 12.2-minute 10%–80% charge; these are prototype results, not a statement of commercial-scale performance.[10][11]
The company has shipped QSE-5 prototype samples for customer testing and is developing the Eagle pilot line to support cell development, process work and customer sampling. Other application efforts include a Honda research and development agreement and demonstrations of QuantumScape cells in an electric motorcycle; these are development programs rather than separately specified commercial products. No marketed services or product-sales mix percentages were disclosed. The 2026 Q2 filing reported no revenue from business activities as of June 30, 2026.[12][13][6][14][15] [3][9][10][11][12][13][6][14][15][11][15]
Geographic presence
QuantumScape is headquartered at 1730 Technology Drive in San Jose, California, where it primarily conducts its office, engineering, research and development, and cell-build pilot-line activities. Its highly automated battery-cell pilot line was installed at the San Jose facilities in 2025; the reviewed disclosures do not identify another company-operated manufacturing site.[16][4][17][18]
The reviewed disclosures do not provide revenue by country or region, employee distribution by geography, or a breakdown of sales markets.[19] [16][4][17][18][19]
Business segments
QuantumScape reports one operating and reportable segment. Its chief operating decision maker reviews financial information on a consolidated basis, so the company does not disclose separate segment-level business or revenue contributions.[8][20]
The company’s activities include developing and commercializing solid-state lithium-metal battery technology, including QSE-5 cells; customer sampling and qualification; pilot-line and manufacturing-process development; and module and pack design for customer integration. These are areas of activity, not separately reported segments.[3][9][21][12][22]
QuantumScape reported no segment revenue as of June 30, 2026. A revenue contribution percentage by segment or activity therefore cannot be calculated from its disclosures.[8] [8][20][3][9][21][12][22]
Company history
QuantumScape was founded in May 2010 by Jagdeep Singh, Tim Holme, and Stanford professor Fritz Prinz to develop solid-state battery technology. Volkswagen began working with the company in 2012, and in 2018 the two formed QSV, a 50/50 joint venture focused on commercialization and a U.S. pilot manufacturing facility.[23][24][25][26]
In 2020, QuantumScape completed a business combination with Kensington Capital Acquisition Corp. and became publicly traded on the NYSE under the ticker QS. The company reported progress validating early single-layer and smaller multilayer cells, while identifying scale-up as a continuing challenge.[23][27][28]
QuantumScape shipped its first A0 prototype cells to automotive manufacturers in 2022. In 2023 it announced QSE-5, its first targeted commercial product, and began low-volume production and customer testing of B-sample cells in 2024. That year, it also entered an agreement with Volkswagen’s battery company PowerCo to industrialize the technology, replacing the earlier joint-venture structure; Siva Sivaram became CEO, with Singh continuing as chairman.[29][30][6][31]
In 2025, QuantumScape, Volkswagen, and PowerCo demonstrated a Ducati electric motorcycle using QSE-5 cells, and the company installed an automated pilot production line in San Jose. The line was inaugurated in February 2026, marking the start of its initial ramp-up.[29][32][33][3] [23][25][26][27][28][29][30][6][32][3][24][31][33]
