QUALCOMM INC/DE

Updated

Overview

QUALCOMM Incorporated is a global technology company focused on wireless semiconductors and related intellectual property licensing. It develops and commercializes foundational technologies used in 3G, 4G and 5G connectivity, high-performance and low-power computing, and on-device artificial intelligence, and it generates revenue primarily from integrated circuit products such as its Snapdragon platforms and from licensing patents and other rights. The company describes its mission as helping to bring “intelligent computing everywhere.” [1][2]

Qualcomm’s technology base was built around smartphones and other connected devices, but it has expanded into automotive and Internet of Things markets, including digital cockpit and driver-assistance systems, PCs, edge networking and industrial applications. Headquartered in San Diego, the company operates sales, administrative and research facilities primarily in the United States, India and China, and also has manufacturing facilities in Singapore, Germany and China, giving it a broad international footprint. In fiscal 2024, Qualcomm reported $38.962 billion in revenue, and filings-based market data indicate it employed about 49,000 people as of September 29, 2024.[1] [1]

Products & services

QUALCOMM’s main product portfolio is sold through QCT, which develops semiconductor platforms and system software for mobile devices, automotive systems and IoT products. Its flagship Snapdragon family includes mobile, compute, sound and automotive platforms that combine application processors with wireless connectivity, including cellular modems for baseband voice and data plus Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and global positioning. Qualcomm describes these application processors as supporting AI, security, graphics, display, audio, video, camera and compute processing, and it specifically names Qualcomm Oryon CPUs and Kryo CPUs for high compute performance with optimized power consumption, Hexagon NPUs for AI processing with high performance-per-watt and thermal efficiency, and Adreno GPUs for 3D gaming and user-interface graphics [6][7].

Within connectivity hardware, Qualcomm sells Snapdragon 5G modem-RF systems and other RF front-end products. The company says its modem-to-antenna platform integrates AI to improve data speeds, call connectivity, coverage and battery life, while its RFFE portfolio supports 5G sub‑6 GHz, mmWave and 4G LTE multimode devices with transmit/receive modules, power tracking, tuning systems, multimode-multiband power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers and mmWave antenna solutions [8]. Qualcomm also offers wireless connectivity and networking products such as Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, location and related services, as well as standalone Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, applications processor and Ethernet products; its networking chips and software are used in wireless access points, routers, broadband gateway equipment and PON systems [9]. In automotive, Qualcomm’s platforms are aimed at connectivity, digital cockpit and ADAS/AD use cases, including the Snapdragon Digital Chassis, and in PCs it launched Snapdragon X Series platforms for low-power on-device AI processing [10][11].

QUALCOMM also provides technology licensing through QTL, which grants rights to use portions of its intellectual-property portfolio, including patents essential to or useful in products implementing WCDMA, LTE and OFDMA-based 5G standards. These licenses cover 3G, 4G and 5G standard-essential patents for single-mode and multimode devices, and licensees make products such as handsets, tablets, PCs, plug-in modem cards, embedded modules, connected vehicle units and modules, wireless access points and small-cell products [12][13]. In FY2024, QCT generated $33.196 billion of revenue, including $24.863 billion from handsets, $2.910 billion from automotive and $5.423 billion from IoT, while QTL generated $5.572 billion of licensing revenue; based on Qualcomm’s $38.962 billion total revenue, QCT represented about 85% of revenue and QTL about 14% [14]. [6]

Geographic presence

QUALCOMM’s sales are concentrated in a small number of geographies. In fiscal 2024, revenue was reported based on customer or licensee headquarters location, with China (including Hong Kong) contributing $17.8 billion, or about 46% of total revenue, the United States $9.7 billion, or about 25%, South Korea $8.0 billion, or about 20%, and other foreign locations $3.5 billion, or about 9%, on total revenue of $39.0 billion. The company states that this headquarters-based presentation was adopted beginning in fiscal 2024 and prior periods were recast to better reflect the geographic profile of revenues.[17]

Its principal executive offices are in San Diego, California, and headquarters and certain research and development and network management hub operations are located there. QUALCOMM also operates owned and leased manufacturing facilities in China, Germany and Singapore, and maintains sales, administrative and R&D properties worldwide, primarily in the United States, India and China.[20][21]

At September 29, 2024, the company occupied 14.1 million square feet globally, including 5.3 million square feet in the United States and 8.8 million square feet in other countries; 5.8 million square feet were owned and 8.3 million square feet were leased. In addition, the majority of its long-lived tangible assets outside the United States are located in Taiwan and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region.[22] [17]

Business segments

QUALCOMM reports three reportable segments: QCT, QTL and QSI. QCT develops and supplies integrated circuits and system software for mobile devices, automotive systems and IoT applications; QTL licenses portions of QUALCOMM’s intellectual property portfolio, including patent rights used in wireless products; and QSI makes strategic investments. In fiscal 2024, QCT generated $33.2 billion of revenue, or about 85% of total revenue, QTL generated $5.6 billion, or about 14%, and QSI generated $18 million, which was immaterial as a share of revenue.[25]

The company also provides a second layer of segmentation within QCT, disaggregating that segment by revenue stream based on end market: Handsets, Automotive and IoT. In fiscal 2024, Handsets contributed $24.9 billion, about 75% of QCT revenue, Automotive contributed $2.9 billion, about 9%, and IoT contributed $5.4 billion, about 16%. QUALCOMM defines these streams as products sold for use in mobile handsets; in automobiles, including connectivity, digital cockpit and ADAS/AD; and in IoT applications spanning consumer devices, edge networking and industrial uses.[28] [25]

Company history

Qualcomm was founded in 1985 in California by Irwin Jacobs and colleagues, and it later reincorporated in Delaware in 1991 [32][33]. In its early years the company focused on digital wireless communications, and it states that it placed the first CDMA call in 1989, a landmark in the development of the technology that became central to its business [34]. In 1998, Qualcomm completed the spin-off of Leap Wireless International [35].

Irwin Jacobs handed the chief executive role to Paul Jacobs in 2005 [36]. Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon in 2007, an important milestone in the buildout of its modern mobile-chip business [37]. It expanded beyond its original handset and licensing roots through acquisitions including Atheros in 2011 and the agreement to acquire CSR in 2014 [38][39]. Another leadership transition followed when Steve Mollenkopf was named CEO in late 2013, and Cristiano Amon was appointed CEO-elect in 2021 [40][41]. [32]
