Company history
PPG Industries began in 1883 as Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, founded by John B. Ford and John Pitcairn in Creighton, Pennsylvania. Its plate-glass factory was the first commercially successful one in the United States. The company expanded into chemicals with an alkali plant in 1899 and entered coatings in 1900 by acquiring an interest in Patton Paint. In 1968, it adopted the name PPG Industries to reflect its diversification beyond glass.[33][34]
A later shift toward coatings was marked by the 2008 acquisition of SigmaKalon. In 2013, PPG separated its commodity chemicals business through a merger with Georgia Gulf and acquired AkzoNobel’s North American architectural coatings business. It expanded further in architectural coatings by acquiring Comex in 2014 and Tikkurila in 2021, while completing the sale of its remaining fiberglass operations in 2017.[35][36][37][38][39][40] [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40]
