Overview
Powell Industries, Inc. designs, manufactures and services custom-engineered electrical equipment and systems used to distribute, control and monitor electrical power and protect electrically powered equipment. Founded in Houston in 1947, the company serves oil and gas, petrochemical, utility, commercial and other industrial markets.[1][2]
Its products include power-control-room substations, engineered modules and E-Houses, switchgear, circuit breakers, motor-control centers and bus duct systems; related services include installation, commissioning, modification and repair. Powell is headquartered in Houston and serves customers in the United States and internationally, including through operations in Canada and the U.K.[3][4][2]
For fiscal 2025, ended September 30, 2025, Powell reported revenue of approximately $1.10 billion and 3,143 full-time employees, plus 315 contract employees.[5][6] The reviewed company materials do not state a distinct mission statement.[1][7] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][6][7]
Products & services
Powell Industries’ products include integrated power control room substations (PCRs®), custom-engineered modules and E-Houses, medium-voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control centers, monitoring and control systems, switches, and bus duct systems. Its electrical equipment is designed for applications from 480 to 38,000 volts and to applicable U.S. ANSI and international IEC standards.[8] Product-specific offerings include PowlVac® switchgear, available from 5–38 kV, and Power/Vac® switchgear for 5/15 kV applications; Powell also offers FlexTrol™ medium-voltage motor control centers and non-segregated phase bus duct.[9][10][11][12]
Products are often integrated into custom-built PCRs, modules or E-Houses, with some projects also including installation and commissioning.[4] Services include inspection, installation, commissioning, modification, repair, retrofit and retrofill work, as well as spare parts and replacement breakers for existing equipment.[8][13] Powell reports revenue by end market rather than as a product-versus-service breakdown.[14] [8][4][13][14][9][10][11][12][9][10][11][12]
Geographic presence
Powell Industries’ operations are concentrated in the United States, with its headquarters and several manufacturing and office facilities in Houston, Texas. Its other listed facilities include North Canton, Ohio; Northlake, Illinois; Bradford and Deeside in the United Kingdom; and Acheson, Alberta, Canada.[15] The company’s principal executive office is at 8550 Mosley Road, Houston, Texas.[16]
For FY2025, revenue by customer destination was concentrated in the United States (79.7%) and Canada (14.2%). The remaining revenue came from the Middle East and Africa (2.5%), Europe (2.3%), Asia/Pacific (0.8%), and Mexico, Central and South America (0.5%).[17][18] Powell also reported that projects located outside the United States accounted for approximately 20% of FY2025 revenue; this measure differs from destination-based revenue because international sales include exports from U.S. facilities.[19] In the first nine months of FY2026, the United States remained the largest customer-destination region (78.9%), followed by Canada (10.1%), the Middle East and Africa (4.6%), Europe (3.2%), Asia/Pacific (3.1%), and Mexico, Central and South America (0.2%).[20][21] [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]
Business segments
Powell Industries reports one operating and reportable segment, encompassing the development, design, manufacture and servicing of custom-engineered electrical distribution, control and monitoring systems. Its products include integrated power-control-room substations, modular E-Houses, switchgear and control gear, circuit breakers, motor-control centers, and related monitoring, communications, field-service and retrofit work [22][3]. In FY2025, this segment generated $1,104.3 million, effectively 100% of consolidated revenue; the company does not report product lines as separate segments [23].
Powell also describes revenue by end market, but these categories are not reportable segments. Based on disclosed market revenues, the approximate FY2025 mix was oil and gas (excluding petrochemical) 36.8%, electric utility 25.3%, commercial and other industrial 16.1%, petrochemical 13.7%, light rail traction power 3.7%, and all other markets 4.4% [24]. For the first nine months of FY2026, the approximate mix was oil and gas 36.9%, electric utility 27.7%, commercial and other industrial 19.9%, petrochemical 8.0%, light rail traction power 3.0%, and all other markets 4.5% [25]. These market percentages are approximate, derived from the disclosed market revenue figures and consolidated revenue. [22][3][23][24][25]
Company history
Powell Industries was founded in Houston in 1947 by William E. Powell as a metal-working shop serving the petrochemical industry [7][2]. In 1968, it developed a Power Control Room concept for a Union Carbide project in Puerto Rico, and in 1982 began manufacturing its PowlVac metal-clad switchgear and circuit breakers [7][26].
The company expanded internationally with its 2005 acquisition of UK-based Switchgear & Instrumentation Limited [27]. In 2006, it acquired GE’s medium-voltage ANSI switchgear product line and related assets [28], followed by the acquisition of PowerComm’s Canadian business in 2009 [29][30]. In 2014, Powell sold its Transdyn subsidiary to Kapsch TrafficCom [31]. Leadership transitions included Patrick L. McDonald succeeding Tom Powell as CEO in 2008 and Brett A. Cope becoming President and CEO in 2016 [32][33].
