POSCO HOLDINGS INC.

Updated

Overview

POSCO Holdings Inc. is a South Korean holding company that manages a diversified group whose core activities include steel, infrastructure, rechargeable-battery materials and other businesses. Its infrastructure operations include global trading, construction, logistics and related services; battery-materials activities include cathode and anode materials and lithium-related investments. The company describes its mission as being a “future eco-friendly materials provider.” [1]

Steel remains central to the group: products include hot- and cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, plate, wire rod and silicon-steel sheet, serving industries such as automotive, shipbuilding and appliances. The group is headquartered in South Korea and has international reach through global trading and overseas steel sales, with Asia its largest steel export region.[9][10] POSCO Holdings reported FY2025 consolidated revenue of KRW 68.987 trillion; a secondary source reports 42,873 employees at year-end 2025.[11][12]

The company traces its origins to 1968, when it was established to manufacture and distribute rolled steel and plate. In 2022, domestic steel production and sales were separated into POSCO, and the parent became POSCO Holdings to manage and diversify the group’s portfolio.[13][14] [1]

Products & services

POSCO’s steel products include cold-rolled and galvanized products, hot-rolled coils and sheets, stainless steel, plates, wire rods, and silicon-steel sheets, as well as pig iron, billets, blooms, and slabs. Their applications range from automotive body panels and chassis, household appliances, and structural steel to shipbuilding, pipelines, pressure vessels, fasteners, springs, transformers, generators, and electric motors. In 2025, cold-rolled products represented 36.4% of listed principal-product deliveries by volume, hot-rolled products 33.1%, plates 15.6%, stainless steel 8.2%, wire rods 4.5%, and silicon-steel sheets 2.2%.[15]

Named product offerings include POSCO’s GIGA STEEL automotive steels; a 2017 plant announcement described a production line designed for steel with tensile strength up to 1.5 GPa.[27] Its electrical-steel range includes grain-oriented PG-Core, PH-Core, PHD-Core and PHE-Core grades, and non-oriented PN-Core, PNF-Core, PNX-Core, PNA-Core, PNH-Core, PNE-Core and PNM-Core grades.[28][29] POSCO Future M supplies cathode and anode active materials for batteries, with its portfolio development including high-nickel, LMR and high-voltage mid-nickel cathodes, and solid-state-battery and silicon-anode materials.[30][31] POSCO M-TECH also produces aluminum deoxidizers for steelmaking and provides steel-product packaging solutions.[32] [15]

Geographic presence

South Korea is POSCO Holdings’ main operating base, with major works in Pohang and Gwangyang and offices in Pohang and Seoul. POSCO’s overseas directory also lists manufacturing subsidiaries and processing centers across China, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and India.[33][34]

In 2025, exports and overseas sales to foreign customers accounted for 61.7% of Steel Segment revenue. Asian markets accounted for 52.5% of Steel Segment export-sales revenue; within steel export revenue, China represented 19.0%, Japan 11.0%, and Asia excluding China and Japan 22.5%. These are steel-segment export figures, not geographic shares of consolidated group revenue.[35][10]

POSCO’s 2025 ESG workforce reporting lists 17,643 employees within its stated domestic-worksite reporting boundary: 17,235 in Korea, 253 in other Asia, 36 in North America, 21 in South America, 21 in Europe and 12 in other locations. This reporting boundary should not be read as a complete consolidated workforce distribution.[36] [33]

Business segments

For FY2025, POSCO Holdings reported six revenue categories: Steel (steel products), 54.1% of consolidated revenue; Infrastructure Business—Trading, 34.4%; Infrastructure Business—Construction, 8.1%; Infrastructure Business—Logistics and Others, 0.4%; Rechargeable Battery Materials, 3.0%; and Others, 0.1%. The company also reported a −0.1% basis-difference adjustment, which is not a business segment.[37][11]

In its Q2 2026 reporting, POSCO also used a broader three-part grouping: Steel, Infrastructure, and Rechargeable Battery Materials. This presentation groups the detailed Infrastructure categories together; its quarterly segment revenues are not directly comparable as shares of consolidated revenue because of intersegment sales and eliminations.[38] [37]

Company history

Pohang Iron and Steel Company was established on April 1, 1968, following the selection of Pohang for an integrated steelworks; construction began in 1970. Its first blast furnace produced molten iron in 1973, and the company expanded through Pohang and Gwangyang Works, completing the latter in 1992 and reaching crude-steel capacity of about 21 million tons annually.[39]

The company completed privatization in 2000 and adopted the name POSCO in 2002.[42] In 2010, it incorporated Daewoo International, adding trading and resource-development businesses to the group.[43]

In 2022, POSCO reorganized as a holding company: its steel business was spun off, and POSCO Holdings was established as the listed holding company, with steel operations continuing as POSCO.[44][45] The group’s later diversification included lithium and rechargeable-battery materials, which it identified as core growth businesses in 2022.[46][47] [39]
