Overview

Pony AI Inc. is an autonomous-driving technology company founded in 2016. Its full-stack Virtual Driver technology supports Robotaxi ride-hailing, autonomous trucking for freight and logistics, and licensing and engineering services for automakers and transportation network companies.[1]

The company’s stated mission is to provide “safe, advanced, and reliable full-stack autonomous driving technology to revolutionize the future of transportation.” [4] Its operations are centered in China and the United States, with additional international development activity.[5][6]

For the year ended December 31, 2025, Pony AI reported revenue of $90.0 million, including $56.7 million in service revenue and $33.3 million in product revenue.[7][8] The company reported operating more than 1,400 Robotaxis as of March 31, 2026.[9] [1]

Products & services

Pony AI’s passenger-autonomy offering includes its Robotaxi service, marketed through PonyPilot. Its seventh-generation (Gen-7) Robotaxi vehicles include Toyota bZ-4X, BAIC Alpha-T5 and GAC AION V models. The Gen-7 system is designed with redundant sensing, computing, power and actuation components, plus remote-assistance capability, enhanced human-machine interfaces and trip-planning functions. The described sensor suite includes nine LiDARs, 14 high-resolution cameras, four millimeter-wave radars, four microphones, two wade sensors and collision sensors; the company describes 360-degree perception with detection up to 650 meters.[10]

For freight, Pony AI offers autonomous Robotruck transportation and logistics services, including fare-charging operations and services to logistics clients. It also integrates its Virtual Driver system with truck platforms and provides related software customization, vehicle integration, engineering and road-testing services. Its “1+N” platooning approach uses a safety operator in the lead truck with driver-out following trucks. Virtual Driver is the company’s Level 4 autonomous-driving system, also supplied for OEM integration and fleet operations; PonyWorld is its simulation and training system, which the company says can generate more than 10 billion simulated miles per week.[14]

In 2025, reported revenue categories were $16.5 million from engineering solution services (18.3% of total revenue), $40.2 million from Virtual Driver operation and related services (44.7%), and $33.3 million from product sales (37.0%). These are revenue-recognition categories, not a breakdown by Robotaxi, Robotruck or other product line. A separate results announcement reported $16.6 million of Robotaxi services revenue for 2025; the cited filings do not provide a comparable Robotruck revenue share.[18][19] [10]

Geographic presence

Pony AI reports operations in China and the United States, with most of its customers and suppliers located in China [5]. In China, it has pursued driverless commercial operations in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai; its 2025 annual report describes permits and operating developments in these Tier-1 cities [20][21]. The company lists its principal executive office in Guangzhou, and its careers page identifies hiring locations in Fremont, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen [22][23].

The FY2025 annual report identifies China as Pony AI’s principal customer market but does not provide revenue by country or region, or geographic revenue percentages [5]. The company reported 1,669 employees at December 31, 2025; no employee breakdown by geography was identified [19]. [5]

Business segments

Pony AI reports one operating and reportable segment; its chief operating decision maker reviews consolidated results rather than assessing separate segments. Robotaxi, Robotruck, and licensing are therefore revenue categories, not separately reported segments.[24]

For 2025, revenue was $16.607 million from Robotaxi services (about 18.5% of total), $40.601 million from Robotruck services (about 45.1%), and $32.793 million from licensing and applications (about 36.4%), out of $90.001 million total.[25] Robotaxi services include passenger ride-hailing and related services; Robotruck services provide freight transportation and logistics; licensing and applications include software licensing and applications such as V2X projects and POV products and services.[26] [24]

Company history

Pony.ai was founded in 2016 in Fremont, California, by Jun Peng and Tiancheng Lou. It began operating autonomous vehicles on public roads in Guangzhou in 2018 and launched Robotaxi service there later that year.[29]

In 2019, Pony.ai partnered with Hyundai and Via on BotRide, an on-demand autonomous-vehicle pilot in Irvine, California. Toyota invested $400 million in Pony.ai in 2020, forming a strategic partnership.[31][32]

From 2021 to 2023, Pony.ai obtained approvals for paid Robotaxi service in Beijing and public-facing driverless service in Beijing and Guangzhou. In 2024, it announced a Toyota- and GAC Toyota-backed joint venture to deploy Toyota-branded Robotaxis, then completed its IPO and began trading on Nasdaq as PONY.[33]

In 2025, Pony.ai introduced its seventh-generation Robotaxi lineup, developed with Toyota, BAIC and GAC, and reported fully driverless commercial operations in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing.[37][20] [29]
