Planet Labs PBC

Updated

Overview

Planet Labs PBC operates in the Earth-observation and geospatial data sector. It uses satellite constellations and a data-processing platform to provide satellite imagery, analytics-ready data and solutions, and satellite services to government and commercial customers. Its global imaging capabilities include frequent broad-area monitoring and higher-resolution tasked imagery.[1]

The company’s stated mission is to use space to help life on Earth by imaging the world every day and making global change visible, accessible, and actionable.[4] In its FY2026 Form 10-K, for the year ended January 31, 2026, Planet reported revenue of $307.727 million and approximately 1,000 employees, including about 945 full-time employees, across 29 countries.[5][6] [1]

Products & services

PlanetScope (also described as Planet Monitoring) provides broad-area Earth imagery designed for near-daily monitoring. Planet describes its imagery as 3.7 m ground-sample distance (GSD) across four multispectral bands—red, green, blue and near-infrared—and says it harmonizes imagery with Landsat and Copernicus data to support consistent time series.[2]

High-Resolution Tasking uses SkySat and Pelican satellites to collect imagery of specified locations, with imaging modes including point, long-strip, stereo and video. Planet lists up to 50 cm GSD after processing, multiple potential revisits per day, API-supported tasking and delivery in under four hours from capture.[9] Tanager provides hyperspectral imagery across more than 400 visible and shortwave-infrared bands at 30 m GSD; associated offerings include calibrated-radiance and surface-reflectance imagery and derived methane products.[11][12]

The Planet Insights Platform provides cloud-based access to Planet’s data catalog, discovery and ordering tools, tasking, APIs, browser applications and GIS workflows. Its data and analytics offerings include site monitoring, change detection, vessel detection and enhanced analytics; Planetary Variables include measures such as soil-water content, crop biomass, land-surface temperature and forest carbon. The Forest Carbon product offers estimates of above-ground forest carbon, tree height and canopy cover, with quarterly updates.[13]

Planet’s latest available filing, for the six months ended July 31, 2026, reports total revenue but does not provide revenue or performance percentages by product or service; the disclosed company-wide growth rate therefore cannot be assigned to individual offerings.[17][18] [2]

Geographic presence

For the year ended January 31, 2026, Planet Labs PBC reported operating throughout the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. Its wholly owned subsidiaries include entities in Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Singapore, Slovenia, Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Japan.[20]

San Francisco is the company’s headquarters, with additional offices in Berlin, Haarlem, Ljubljana, Graz, and Washington, D.C.[21] Planet identifies customers in more than 65 countries.[22] Its FY2026 filing does not disclose revenue by country or region, or employee distribution by geography.[23][24] [20]

Business segments

Planet Labs PBC reports one operating and reportable segment, covering the company’s consolidated business. Management evaluates performance and allocates resources on a consolidated basis; it does not report separately named business segments or segment-level revenue contributions. This remains the reported structure in its FY2027 second-quarter filing.[25]

Planet describes its offerings as an Earth-observation platform for accessing and analyzing data, tasking high-resolution satellites, and delivering insights through solutions and software tools. These are product and service descriptions, not separately reported segments, and the reviewed filings provide no product- or geography-based revenue percentages.[13] [25][13]

Company history

Planet Labs was founded in 2010 as Cosmogia by former NASA scientists Will Marshall, Robbie Schingler, and Chris Boshuizen. Its first successful Dove satellite launch followed in April 2013, beginning the development of a fleet designed to collect frequent images of Earth.[26]

The company expanded its capabilities through acquisitions, including BlackBridge in 2015, Google’s Terra Bella business in 2017, and Sinergise in 2023. In February 2017, it launched 88 Dove satellites, a major step toward imaging the world’s landmass daily.[29]

Planet became a public benefit corporation and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2021 following a business combination with dMY Technology Group IV. In 2024, it launched the Planet Insights Platform and its first hyperspectral satellite, Tanager-1, extending its offerings beyond conventional satellite imagery.[33] [26]
