PIPER SANDLER COMPANIES

Updated

Overview

Piper Sandler Companies is a U.S.-based financial-services firm focused on investment banking and institutional securities. Its services include financial advisory, underwriting and financing, equity and fixed-income sales and trading, and research; it also offers alternative asset-management services through subsidiaries.[1]

The firm serves investors, corporations, governments, and nonprofit organizations, with client and research activity in North America and Europe. Its 2025 filing indicates that substantially all of its net revenue and long-lived assets were in the United States. The company describes its mission as “connecting capital with opportunity to build a better future.” [3]

For fiscal 2025, Piper Sandler reported net revenue of $1.899 billion. Its company profile lists more than 1,850 employees and 60+ offices across seven countries; these are company-reported scale indicators and are not specified as year-end 2025 figures. The firm traces its history to 1895 and adopted the Piper Sandler Companies name following the merger of Piper Jaffray and Sandler O’Neill, completed in 2020.[6] [1]

Products & services

Piper Sandler’s offerings are financial services rather than physical products. Its investment-banking services include mergers and acquisitions and other financial advisory, corporate debt and equity financing, municipal financing, and related underwriting. In FY2025, investment-banking revenue was $1.40 billion, up 26.8% year over year; advisory contributed $1.04 billion, corporate financing $217.2 million, and municipal financing $145.8 million.[10] The filing reports these amounts and growth rates, but does not give them as percentages of total company performance.

The company also provides institutional brokerage, trading and research across equities, fixed income, convertible debt and derivatives. Services include trade execution, fundamental research on approximately 840 companies, macroeconomic and technical research, and fixed-income advice on balance-sheet management, investment strategy and customized portfolio solutions.[3][11] Its alternative asset-management activities include merchant banking and healthcare funds, with revenue from management and performance fees as well as investment gains or losses.[12][13] [10]

Geographic presence

Piper Sandler reports one operating segment, with substantially all net revenues and long-lived assets in the United States; it does not disclose a country-by-country revenue split.[4] As of February 19, 2026, it operated 55 principal offices across 31 states and the District of Columbia, as well as offices in London, Aberdeen, Munich, Paris, Zurich, Abu Dhabi (ADGM), and Hong Kong. Minneapolis is its principal executive office.[14]

At December 31, 2025, the company had 1,858 employees: 1,735 in the United States (about 93.4%) and 123 in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Hong Kong combined (about 6.6%). It does not provide employee counts by individual foreign market.[15] In September 2026, Piper Sandler announced the launch of European equities trading, supported by a Paris office, French regulatory approval, European passporting rights, and eight new sales-and-trading hires.[16] [4]

Business segments

Piper Sandler reports one operating and reportable segment: its investment banking and institutional securities business. The company describes its activities as investment banking and institutional sales, trading and research; management evaluates performance and allocates resources on a consolidated basis.[17]

For 2025, the company’s business-line revenue disclosures show investment banking generated $1,400.9 million, approximately 73.8% of net revenues, from advisory, corporate financing and municipal financing. Institutional brokerage generated $433.2 million, approximately 22.8%, from equity brokerage and fixed-income services, including sales, trading and research. These are business-line disclosures, not separately reported segments. Interest income and investment income were additional revenue-statement lines, not separate reportable segments.[6] [17]

Company history

Piper Sandler traces its origins to 1895, when George B. Lane established a commercial-paper brokerage in Minneapolis. In 1913, H.C. Piper Sr. and C. Palmer Jaffray formed Piper, Jaffray & Co.; the firm merged with Lane’s business in 1917 and, after a 1931 combination with Hopwood Investment Co., became Piper, Jaffray & Hopwood.[8]

The firm became part of U.S. Bancorp in 1998 and was spun off as an independent, publicly held company on December 31, 2003.[8][19] In the following years, Piper Jaffray expanded through acquisitions including Edgeview Partners in 2013, River Branch Holdings in 2015, and energy investment bank Simmons & Company International in 2016.[20]

In 2018, Chad Abraham succeeded Andrew Duff as CEO.[23] Piper Jaffray and Sandler O’Neill announced a merger in 2019; it closed in January 2020, creating Piper Sandler Companies.[24][9] That year, the company also completed its acquisition of chemicals-focused investment bank The Valence Group.[25] [8]
