Company profile

PETROCHINA CO LTD-A

Updated

Overview

PetroChina Company Limited is a Chinese integrated energy company whose operations span oil and natural gas exploration and production, refining, petrochemicals, fuel marketing, and natural gas transportation and sales. Its businesses also include new energy and materials. Established in 1999 through the restructuring of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), PetroChina remains controlled by CNPC.[1]

China is PetroChina’s principal market and operating base, while its oil and gas activities extend overseas. The company describes its mission as pursuing green development and providing reliable energy to support customers and people’s lives. In 2024, it reported revenue of RMB 2.94 trillion and had approximately 371,000 employees at year-end.[4] [1]

Products & services

PetroChina’s principal products include crude oil, natural gas, refined fuels and petrochemicals. Its reported refined-fuel categories are gasoline, diesel and kerosene; in 2024 it sold 64.1 million tonnes of gasoline, 74.2 million tonnes of diesel and 20.7 million tonnes of kerosene. Its chemical output includes ethylene, synthetic resins, synthetic-fiber materials and polymers, synthetic rubber, and urea.[8][9]

The company also transports and sells natural gas, markets refined fuels and non-fuel goods through its retail network, and provides pipeline transportation services. In 2024 it reported natural-gas sales of 287.8 billion cubic metres. Refined products were its largest reported gross product-revenue category, followed by crude oil and natural gas; those gross figures include intersegment transactions and therefore do not represent shares of consolidated revenue.[2] [8]

Geographic presence

PetroChina’s operations are concentrated in mainland China, where it reported exploration activity in the Tarim, Sichuan, Junggar, Ordos and Songliao basins. It also operates internationally: reported activities include exploration in Aktobe, Indonesia and Chad, a gas-processing plant in Iraq, and blocks in Suriname and Oman. In 2024, mainland operations produced 1,603.2 million barrels of oil-and-gas equivalent, while overseas operations produced 194.2 million barrels, or 10.8% of the group total.[12]

Of its 2024 revenue from contracts with customers, PetroChina attributed RMB1,972.8 billion (67.2%) to mainland China and RMB963.8 billion (32.8%) to “Others.” The latter is reported as a single geographic category rather than by country. PetroChina’s registered address is in Beijing; it reported 22,441 gas stations at year-end 2024, without a provincial breakdown in the cited figures.[14] [12]

Business segments

PetroChina reports four operating segments: Oil, Gas and New Energy; Refining, Chemicals and New Materials; Marketing; and Natural Gas Sales. Oil, Gas and New Energy covers oil and gas exploration and production alongside new-energy activities. Refining, Chemicals and New Materials processes crude oil and produces refined fuels, chemicals and new materials. Marketing sells petroleum products through wholesale, retail and trading channels, while Natural Gas Sales markets domestic and imported gas to wholesale and end users.[17]

Based on 2024 revenue from external customers, Marketing contributed approximately 64% of the company total, Natural Gas Sales 19%, Refining, Chemicals and New Materials 12%, and Oil, Gas and New Energy 5%; Head Office and Other contributed less than 1%. These percentages exclude sales between segments, so the upstream segment’s external-revenue share does not capture its sales to PetroChina’s other businesses.[21] [17]

Company history

PetroChina was established on November 5, 1999, when its parent, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), reorganized and transferred core operations and related assets into a new joint-stock company. PetroChina’s shares began trading in New York and Hong Kong in April 2000, followed by a listing of its A shares in Shanghai in November 2007.[22]

In September 2020, PetroChina transferred interests in companies holding major pipeline assets to the newly formed PipeChina in exchange for a 29.9% equity stake and cash. The transaction marked a significant change in PetroChina’s ownership of pipeline infrastructure.[25][26] [22]
