PEABODY ENERGY CORP

Updated

Overview

Peabody Energy Corporation is a coal producer in the mining sector. Its business includes thermal coal, used mainly for electricity generation, and metallurgical coal, used in steelmaking. Its principal reportable segments are Seaborne Thermal, Seaborne Metallurgical, Powder River Basin, and Other U.S. Thermal [1]. The company operates mines in the United States and Australia and sells into domestic and export markets [2]. Peabody describes its mission as creating shareholder value as a leading global coal supplier while enabling economic prosperity and a better quality of life [3].

For FY2025, Peabody reported revenue of $3.86 billion and approximately 5,400 employees at year-end. Its workforce serves customers in more than 25 countries across six continents [4]. [1]

Products & services

Peabody’s products are thermal coal and metallurgical coal, produced across its U.S. and seaborne operations. Thermal coal is sold mainly to electric utilities for power generation; U.S. sales are primarily under long-term supply agreements. Powder River Basin coal is surface-mined, sub-bituminous, and lower in sulfur and heat content (Btu), while coal from other U.S. thermal operations includes bituminous and sub-bituminous grades and is generally higher in sulfur and Btu.[7]

The company’s seaborne operations sell both thermal and metallurgical coal to international customers, with some Australian domestic sales. Segment classifications reflect mines’ primary customer bases and reserve types rather than an absolute grade distinction: mines may produce some coal of the other grade, and metallurgical coal may be marketed as thermal coal depending on market conditions. Named operations include the Wilpinjong, Wambo Open-cut, and South Wambo thermal mines in Australia, and Centurion, an underground longwall metallurgical mine in Queensland.[2]

For 2025, reported segment sales and revenue were: Seaborne Thermal, 15.4 million tons and $908.5 million; Seaborne Metallurgical, 8.6 million tons and $1,036.6 million; Powder River Basin, 84.5 million tons and $1,153.0 million; and Other U.S. Thermal, 13.4 million tons and $707.3 million. The disclosed customer-facing activities are mining, coal preparation, and coal sales; the reviewed materials do not identify a separate service line.[10][7] [7]

Geographic presence

Peabody’s mining operations are located in the United States and Australia. U.S. operations span Wyoming’s Powder River Basin and mines in Illinois, Indiana, New Mexico, Colorado and Alabama. In Australia, its operations include mines in New South Wales and Queensland.[11]

For FY2025, reported domestic revenue was $1,996.5 million, about 51.7% of consolidated revenue; export revenue was $1,806.6 million, about 46.8%. The filing reports revenue by domestic/export and coal category, but does not provide export revenue by destination country.[14] Peabody’s global headquarters is in St. Louis, Missouri, and it also identifies a Brisbane business office. At year-end 2025, about 3,500 employees were in the U.S., with the remainder primarily in Australia; approximately 94% worked in mine operations in the U.S. and Australia.[15][16] [11]

Business segments

Peabody reports four business segments. Seaborne Thermal comprises mines in New South Wales, Australia, focused on thermal coal; it generated $908.5 million, approximately 23.5% of FY2025 revenue.[17] Seaborne Metallurgical includes mines in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, and Alabama, U.S., focused on metallurgical coal; it generated $1,036.6 million, approximately 26.8%.[18][14]

The two U.S. thermal segments are Powder River Basin, covering mines in Wyoming, and Other U.S. Thermal, covering operations in Illinois, Indiana, New Mexico, and Colorado.[19] Powder River Basin generated $1,153.0 million, approximately 29.9% of revenue, and Other U.S. Thermal generated $707.3 million, approximately 18.3%.[14] Together, the four reportable segments accounted for approximately 98.6% of consolidated FY2025 revenue of $3,861.5 million.[17][14] Peabody also reports Corporate and Other separately; it is not one of the four reportable segments and contributed $56.1 million, approximately 1.5% of revenue.[17] [17]

Company history

Peabody’s origins date to 1883, when Francis S. Peabody established a Chicago coal business under the name Peabody, Daniels & Company; it was incorporated as Peabody Coal Company in 1890.[21] Kennecott acquired the company in 1968, and after antitrust proceedings it was sold in 1976 to a consortium that formed Peabody Holding Company.[22]

After subsequent changes in ownership, Peabody became an independent public company in 2001, adopting the name Peabody Energy and completing its initial public offering.[23] It expanded in Australia with the 2006 acquisition of Excel Coal and the 2011 acquisition of Macarthur Coal.[24][25] Peabody and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2016 and emerged from restructuring in April 2017.[26] [21]
