Overview
PDD Holdings Inc. is a multinational commerce group that owns and operates a portfolio of businesses focused on digital commerce. The company says its aim is to bring more businesses and people into the digital economy so that local communities and small businesses can benefit from increased productivity and new opportunities. Its platforms connect buyers with third-party merchants, and the company primarily generates revenue from online platform services, especially online marketing services and transaction services.[1][2][3]
The business is defined mainly by Pinduoduo and Temu. Pinduoduo, launched in 2015, offers a broad range of value-for-money merchandise, including agricultural produce, apparel, consumer electronics, household goods, cosmetics, sports and fitness products, and auto accessories. Temu, launched in Boston in 2022, is a global online platform offering products across categories such as apparel, electronics, household goods, tools, and pet supplies. While Pinduoduo and Temu have different geographic coverage, both platforms primarily serve merchants in China; Temu has expanded internationally and, by the end of 2024, was serving consumers in markets including the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Italy.[4][5][6]
As a size indicator, PDD Holdings reported revenue of RMB393.8 billion (US$54.0 billion) in 2024 and had 23,465 employees as of December 31, 2024. Its principal executive offices are in Dublin, Ireland, and it also maintains offices in North America, Asia, and Europe, reflecting an operating footprint that spans China-focused merchant services and a growing global consumer presence.[7][8][9] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Products & services
PDD Holdings’ main product platforms are Pinduoduo and Temu. Pinduoduo offers a broad merchandise assortment that includes agricultural produce, apparel, electronics, furniture, cosmetics, sports goods, and auto accessories, and it is built around an interactive team-purchase shopping model. An integrated service within the Pinduoduo app, Duo Duo Grocery, provides next-day grocery pickup: consumers place orders in-app, goods move through regional warehouses, and orders are collected at designated pickup points the following day.[10][4][11]
Temu, launched in September 2022, is a global online platform that connects buyers with merchants, manufacturers, and brands, and is supported by logistics vendors and fulfillment partners. PDD says Temu also provides merchants with product-listing access and value-added services intended to help streamline manufacturing and commercial operations. Across its platforms, PDD’s core merchant-facing services are online marketing services and transaction services, supplemented by merchant tools, training resources, and dashboard-based support. Online marketing services allow merchants to bid for keywords and other placements so listings can appear more prominently in search results or recommendations, while transaction services are fees earned from transactions completed on the platforms.[12][5][13][14][15][16][17]
The company also describes several technical capabilities that support these services. Its infrastructure uses cloud services and servers to store data, analyze large volumes of data simultaneously, and update buyer databases and profiles quickly. PDD also references an artificial-intelligence-based screening system for identifying issues in merchant listings, semantic analysis of buyer reviews for compliance monitoring, and a proprietary e-waybill system that connects merchants with third-party logistics providers and gives buyers real-time delivery visibility. In 2024, PDD reported RMB 197.9 billion of revenue from online marketing services and others and RMB 195.9 billion from transaction services, which implies an approximately 50.3% and 49.7% split, respectively, of total revenue.[18][19][20][21] [10][4][11][12][5][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]
Geographic presence
PDD Holdings Inc. is incorporated in the Cayman Islands and lists its principal executive offices at First Floor, 25 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2, D02 XF99, Ireland. The company also states that it maintains offices in North America, Asia, and Europe, and that its servers are hosted in data centers across Europe, the United States, and China [22][23][9].
In its geographic disclosures, PDD Holdings says that both Pinduoduo and Temu primarily serve merchants in China, and that for fiscal 2024 substantially all of its revenue was derived from third-party merchants in China [24][25]. It reports no separate geographic segments because substantially all revenues are derived from within the PRC and substantially all long-lived assets are located in the PRC [26][27]. At the same time, Temu, which was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, was serving consumers in countries and regions including the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Italy by the end of 2024 [12][6]. As of December 31, 2024, the company had 23,465 employees, but it does not disclose employee distribution by geography [28][29]. [22][23][9][24][25][26][27][12][6][28][29]
Business segments
PDD Holdings officially reports a single operating segment and a single reportable segment: the provision of e-commerce services. The business is managed on a consolidated basis by the chief operating decision makers, so the company does not present multiple business segments. It also does not present geographic segments, stating that substantially all revenues and long-lived assets are in the PRC.[30][26]
Within that single e-commerce services segment, revenue is primarily generated from two service lines: online marketing services and others, which place or match merchants’ product listings and advertisements in search and browsing results on the platforms, and transaction services, which are fees charged to merchants for sales completed on the platforms. These are revenue components rather than separately reported segments, but they are the clearest internal breakdown of the business. In 2024, online marketing services and others accounted for 50.3% of revenue and transaction services for 49.7%; in 2023, the mix was 62.0% and 38.0%; in 2022, 78.8% and 21.2%, respectively.[31][14][32][21] [30][26][31][14][32][21]
Company history
PDD Holdings traces its origins to April 2015, when the holding company was incorporated as Walnut Street Group Holding Limited; the Pinduoduo platform was founded in 2015, and the company’s filings identify Colin Zheng Huang as the founder.[33][34][35] In July 2018, the company changed its name to Pinduoduo Inc., and its American depositary shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market on July 26, 2018, marking its public listing.[33][36]
Leadership shifted in 2020 and 2021 as Lei Chen became chief executive officer in July 2020 and chairman in March 2021.[37] In September 2022, the group launched Temu from Boston, initially entering North America as part of its international expansion.[5] In February 2023, the company adopted the name PDD Holdings Inc., and in April 2023 it moved to a co-chief executive structure with Lei Chen and Jiazhen Zhao.[38][39][40] [33][34][35][36][37][5][38][39][40]
