PayPal Holdings, Inc.

Updated

Overview

PayPal Holdings, Inc. is a global digital-payments and commerce company whose two-sided platform connects consumers and merchants. Its offerings include PayPal and Venmo consumer payment services, money transfers and financial features, alongside merchant checkout and payment processing, buy-now-pay-later, point-of-sale and related business services.[1]

PayPal’s stated mission is “to revolutionize commerce globally.” [1] At year-end 2025, it reported 439 million active accounts across approximately 200 markets and about 23,800 employees worldwide; FY2025 net revenue was $33.172 billion.[4] Its corporate roots date to 1998, and it became independent of eBay in 2015.[8][9] [1]

Products & services

PayPal’s consumer products include PayPal and Venmo online and in-person checkout, shopping tools for product discovery, price tracking, deals, package tracking and rewards, and branded debit and credit cards. Its contactless mobile wallet supports NFC payments. PayPal, Venmo and Xoom also support person-to-person payments; Xoom enables international transfers to bank accounts, mobile wallets and cash-pickup locations.[10][11]

Consumer credit offerings include short-term buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) installments at checkout, including in some markets no-interest, no-late-fee options; interest-bearing installments in certain markets; PayPal Credit revolving credit in the U.K.; and PayPal- and Venmo-branded consumer credit cards in the U.S. Merchant products include branded checkout, unbranded payment processing for cards, digital wallets, BNPL, certain cryptocurrencies and local payment methods, plus payouts, payment orchestration, fraud and risk-management tools, and point-of-sale options including an app and card reader. PayPal Working Capital offers eligible small businesses loans or cash advances for a fixed fee, while PayPal Business Loan offers short-term financing for a fixed fee.[12]

PayPal USD (PYUSD) is a U.S.-dollar stablecoin available to PayPal and Venmo customers in certain markets, with transfers to external wallets available to eligible customers subject to controls. The company reports product mix as a share of total payment volume (TPV), rather than as product-level revenue: in 2Q 2026, branded experiences (online and offline) represented 31% of TPV, Venmo 19%, online branded checkout 28%, P2P and other consumer 27%, and payment service provider processing 45%. These categories overlap and are not additive. Reported TPV growth included BNPL at 26%, debit card and tap-to-pay above 60%, Venmo Debit Card monthly active accounts above 50%, and mid-teens growth for Venmo and Braintree TPV.[19] [10]

Geographic presence

PayPal had approximately 23,800 employees across 28 countries at year-end 2025. Its workforce was distributed across the Americas (46%), Asia-Pacific (42%), and Europe and the Middle East (12%); approximately 9,600 employees were in the United States. These figures describe employee locations, not regional revenue.[23]

At December 31, 2025, PayPal reported 3.7 million square feet of owned and leased facilities, including 2.0 million square feet in the United States and 1.7 million square feet in other countries. The facilities support offices, customer service and operations, product development, and data centers. Its corporate headquarters is at 2211 North First Street, San Jose, California.[24][25]

PayPal reports as one operating segment, and its 2025 filing does not provide revenue by country or region.[26] [23]

Business segments

PayPal Holdings, Inc. reports **one operating and reportable segment**, covering its consolidated business; it does not disclose separate segment revenue contributions. For FY2025, that segment generated $33.172 billion in net revenues, or approximately **100%** of consolidated net revenues.[26][27]

The company describes its activities through **consumer solutions** and **merchant solutions**, but these are business areas, not separately reported segments. Consumer solutions include PayPal and Venmo checkout, wallets and cards, peer-to-peer transfers, shopping features, and consumer credit; merchant solutions include branded and unbranded payment processing, payouts, fraud and risk services, point-of-sale products, and merchant financing. The company does not report revenue percentages for these areas.[10] [26]

Company history

PayPal traces its origins to 1998, when Confinity was founded; Confinity and X.com merged in March 2000, bringing together companies developing online payments. PayPal went public in February 2002, and eBay completed its acquisition later that year, in October.[29][30]

During its years as an eBay subsidiary, PayPal expanded through acquisitions, including Braintree—which had acquired Venmo—and Xoom. PayPal completed its separation from eBay and returned to the public markets as an independent company on July 20, 2015; Dan Schulman led the company as CEO.[31]

Subsequent acquisitions broadened PayPal’s activities in in-person payments, shopping and payments in China: it completed its acquisitions of iZettle in 2018, a 70% interest in GoPay in 2019, and Honey in 2020. Alex Chriss succeeded Schulman as president and CEO in September 2023.[33] [29]
