Products & services

Paychex offers several HCM platforms: SurePayroll® for digitally driven small businesses, Paychex Flex® for small and midsize businesses, and Paycor® for larger businesses with more complex needs. Available capabilities include payroll, HR, recruiting and talent management, benefits administration, workforce management, and connections to partner applications.[9] Payroll services include payroll calculation and delivery, tax filing and payment, accounting records and reporting, and employee payment options such as direct deposit, debit cards, checks, ACH, and access to earned wages before payday.[10]

Additional services include HR tools for compliance, compensation, expenses, analytics and employee engagement; recruiting and talent-management workflows; and workforce tools for timekeeping, scheduling, labor management, job costing and labor forecasting.[11] Benefits administration supports enrollment, health and savings accounts, COBRA administration and carrier connectivity.[16] Paychex also provides ASO and PEO outsourcing, including HR support and combinations of payroll, benefits, retirement, insurance and risk-management services; retirement offerings include 401(k), SIMPLE and SEP IRA plans and pooled employer plans.[17] Other offerings include business insurance, a benefits marketplace and funding solutions.[20] As of May 31, 2026, its WISE capability powered approximately 600 AI features and agents across solutions and operations.[23]

For FY2026, Management Solutions accounted for approximately 74.8% of total revenue and PEO and Insurance Solutions for 22.0%; interest on funds held for clients contributed 3.2%. These percentages are calculated from the reported revenue amounts.[24] [9]

Geographic presence

In FY2025, ended May 31, 2025, Paychex served clients in the United States and parts of Europe, with additional operations in India. U.S. facilities outside Rochester support service, fulfillment, and sales; international locations primarily support European operations in Denmark and Germany, while India provides IT, service, and sales support.[25][26]

Substantially all revenue was generated in the United States. Approximately 1% of total revenue came from Europe in each of FY2025, FY2024, and FY2023. At May 31, 2025, approximately 2% of long-lived assets were in European countries and less than 1% in other foreign countries.[27] [25]

Business segments

Paychex reports one consolidated operating segment, with management evaluating performance and allocating resources on a consolidated basis. Accordingly, the company does not report separate revenue shares for multiple operating segments.[28][29]

For FY2026, Paychex separately disclosed two service-revenue categories; these are not additional reportable segments. Management Solutions generated $4,867.9 million, approximately 74.7% of total revenue, and covers payroll and tax services, HCM software, HR outsourcing and advisory, retirement administration, and related funding solutions.[24] PEO and Insurance Solutions generated $1,433.2 million, approximately 22.0% of total revenue, and provides PEO and HR outsourcing, including payroll, HR, benefits, retirement, insurance, and risk-management support.[24] These two categories together represent service revenue; interest on funds held for clients is reported separately.[24] [28]

Company history

Founded in Rochester, New York, in 1971 by B. Thomas Golisano, Paychex began providing payroll services to small businesses. It was incorporated in 1979 and became a public company in 1983.[7][33]

A leadership transition followed in 2004, when Golisano handed the president and CEO role to Jonathan Judge. Martin Mucci became CEO in 2010, and John Gibson succeeded him in October 2022.[34]

Paychex acquired SurePayroll in 2011, expanding its online payroll services, and acquired Oasis Outsourcing in 2018, significantly expanding its professional-employer-organization business. In April 2025, it completed its acquisition of Paycor HCM for approximately $4.1 billion.[37] [39]
