Palantir Technologies Inc.

Updated

Overview

Palantir Technologies Inc. is a software company that builds platforms used by government and commercial organizations to integrate data, analyze information, and support operational decision-making at scale. Founded in 2003, the company initially developed software for the U.S. intelligence community and later expanded into commercial markets. Palantir describes its purpose as building software that helps organizations integrate their data, decisions, and operations at scale. Its business is centered on four principal platforms: Gotham, Foundry, Apollo, and AIP, which together support data integration, operational workflows, software deployment, and artificial intelligence applications across a range of environments.[1]

The company operates across both government and commercial sectors, with Gotham used broadly in government contexts and Foundry used across all commercial customers and some government customers; Apollo serves as a cloud-agnostic software delivery and operations layer, while AIP is designed to operationalize AI and large language models within customer workflows. Palantir has a global footprint, with principal offices in Denver, Palo Alto, New York City, Washington, D.C., and London, along with additional office space in other locations worldwide. In 2024, the company generated $2.866 billion in revenue, including $1.570 billion from government customers and $1.296 billion from commercial customers; geographically, 66% of revenue came from the United States, 11% from the United Kingdom, and 23% from the rest of the world.[5]

As of December 31, 2024, Palantir had 3,936 full-time employees, with 31% of its workforce employed outside the United States, underscoring the company’s international operating presence.[12] [1]

Products & services

Palantir’s principal software products are Gotham, Foundry, Apollo, and AIP (Artificial Intelligence Platform). Gotham is designed to help users identify patterns hidden in complex datasets and support the handoff from analysts to operational users so responses can be planned and executed inside the platform; the company says it is used broadly across government functions. Foundry is described as a central operating system for data that lets users integrate and analyze data in one place and connect data, logic, and actions across workflows, teams, and business units. Apollo is the company’s continuous-delivery layer, built to deploy and update software securely across cloud, on-premises, and other rugged environments through a single control layer for features, security updates, and configuration. AIP is Palantir’s AI layer, providing unified access to open-source, self-hosted, and commercial large language models and turning enterprise data and processes into tools for human users and AI-driven agents.[4]

A key technical element across the product set is Palantir’s Ontology, which maps data into operational context by linking data, logic, and actions into a shared representation of the organization; Palantir says Foundry’s multimodal interfaces let users build data pipelines, perform high-scale analytics, and create operational applications through graphical interfaces, APIs, and software development kits. The company also sells on-premises software licenses bundled with operations-and-maintenance services, including critical updates, support, and maintenance, and it offers professional services such as on-demand user support, user-interface configuration, training, and ongoing ontology and data-modeling support.[17]

Palantir’s current revenue disclosure is organized by customer segment rather than by individual product line: in 2024, 55% of revenue came from government customers and 45% from commercial customers. In earlier IPO-era disclosure, the company said it expected to derive substantially all revenue from Gotham and Foundry at that time.[21] [4]

Geographic presence

Palantir Technologies Inc. is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, and lists Denver as the location of its corporate headquarters. Its principal leased properties are in Denver, Palo Alto, New York City, Washington, D.C., and London, and it also leases other office space around the world. As of December 31, 2024, the company had 3,936 full-time employees, with 31% employed outside the United States.[25]

For revenue reporting, Palantir assigns geography based on the customer’s headquarters or agency location at the time of sale. In 2024, 66% of revenue came from U.S. customers and 34% from customers abroad; U.S. customer revenue was $1.9 billion. The company’s 2024 geographic revenue split was $1.90 billion from the United States (66%), $304.6 million from the United Kingdom (11%), and $660.7 million from the rest of the world (23%).[27] [25]

Business segments

Palantir officially reports two operating segments: Commercial and Government. The company says these segments are determined based on how its chief operating decision maker, the CEO, allocates resources and evaluates performance, with factors including management reporting structure and customer type. Commercial primarily serves customers in non-government industries, while Government primarily serves U.S. and non-U.S. government agencies.[29]

On a revenue basis, the 2024 mix was approximately 55% Government and 45% Commercial, with Government revenue of $1.57 billion and Commercial revenue of $1.30 billion. Palantir also presents a segment performance measure called contribution; in 2024, Government contribution was $948.4 million and Commercial contribution was $771.5 million, a similar roughly 55%/45% split. Separately from its operating segments, the company discloses revenue by geography based on the customer’s headquarters or agency location; for 2024, about 66% of revenue came from the United States and 34% from international markets, including about 11% from the United Kingdom and 23% from the rest of the world.[31] [29]

Company history

Palantir Technologies was incorporated in Delaware on May 6, 2003, and says it was founded in 2003 to build software for the U.S. intelligence community, initially with a focus on counterterrorism investigations.[34][35] Company founder disclosures identify Stephen Cohen, Alexander Karp, and Peter Thiel as founders, and Palantir says Karp has served as chief executive officer since 2005.[36][37]

Its early product history centered on Gotham, a platform built for defense and intelligence analysts; Palantir says Gotham was first launched in 2008.[38][39] Palantir later developed Foundry to bring similar data-integration and operational capabilities to commercial organizations, marking an expansion beyond its original government and intelligence focus.[40] A major corporate milestone came on September 30, 2020, when Palantir became a public company through a direct listing of its Class A common stock on the New York Stock Exchange; the company later said Apollo began being offered commercially in 2021 as part of its broader software platform stack.[41][42] [34]
