Updated

Overview

Ovintiv Inc. is a North American energy company focused on the exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas. Its products include oil, condensate, natural gas and natural gas liquids; its principal operating regions are the United States and Canada, including the Permian Basin and the Montney in Alberta and British Columbia.[1][2]

Ovintiv describes its purpose as making modern life possible by providing affordable, secure and reliable energy.[3][4] For scale, it reported US$8.908 billion in revenue for 2025 and 1,465 employees as of December 31, 2025.[5][6] [1]

Products & services

Ovintiv’s principal products are oil, plant condensate, other natural gas liquids (NGLs), and natural gas. Its filings report plant condensate separately from other NGLs; they do not specify detailed product grades or composition. In the second quarter of 2026, the reported production mix was 34% oil and plant condensate, 13% other NGLs, and 53% natural gas.[7]

The company also reports revenue from sales of purchased product, distinct from production, and from gathering and processing and other services. Its marketing activities include managing market access and arranging delivery options for crude oil, condensate, natural gas, and NGLs, with sales focused on wholesale, creditworthy purchasers.[8] In FY2025, customer revenue included $3.423 billion from oil, $2.115 billion from NGLs, $1.606 billion from natural gas, $1.487 billion from purchased-product sales, and $32 million from gathering, processing, and other services.[9] [7]

Geographic presence

Ovintiv’s operating footprint is concentrated in the United States and Canada. Its principal current areas are the Permian in west Texas and the Montney in northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia. At year-end 2025, the company reported approximately 193,000 net acres in the Permian and 852,000 net acres in the Montney.[10][11] Ovintiv sold its Anadarko assets in Oklahoma in April 2026; in August 2026 it announced acreage additions in the Midland Basin and Alberta’s Montney.[12][13]

Customer revenues are reported by U.S. and Canadian operations. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, reported customer revenue was $3.272 billion from the U.S. and $2.177 billion from Canada, approximately 60% and 40% of the combined total, respectively. For FY2025, the corresponding figures were $5.884 billion and $2.779 billion, approximately 68% and 32%. Percentages are calculated from reported revenue amounts.[14][15]

The company lists offices and field locations in Denver, Colorado; The Woodlands and Midland, Texas; Calgary and Grande Prairie, Alberta; and Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Denver and Calgary are identified as corporate offices.[16] As of December 31, 2025, Ovintiv reported 1,465 employees: 765 in the U.S. and 700 in Canada.[6] [10]

Business segments

Ovintiv reports two operating and reportable segments: **USA Operations** and **Canadian Operations**. USA Operations focuses on upstream oil, NGL and natural-gas activity, principally in the Permian and Anadarko. Canadian Operations is focused on upstream activity in the Montney. The company also reports Corporate & Other as a reconciling category, rather than as a third operating segment.[17][18]

For 2025, USA Operations generated $5.935 billion in segment revenue—approximately 66.6% of consolidated revenue—and Canadian Operations generated $2.894 billion, approximately 32.5%; Corporate & Other accounted for the remainder. USA Operations represented about 71.7% and Canadian Operations about 28.3% of their combined capital investment. The revenue shares use reported segment total revenue divided by consolidated revenue; as another measure, the company reported that the two areas accounted for 64% and 36%, respectively, of upstream production revenues excluding hedging.[18] [17]

Company history

Ovintiv traces its corporate roots through a series of Canadian predecessors, including Canadian Pacific Railway (1881), CP Oil and Gas (1958), PanCanadian Petroleum (1971) and Alberta Energy Company (1973). PanCanadian and Alberta Energy Company merged in 2002 to form Encana; Encana expanded into the United States with its 2004 acquisition of Tom Brown Inc.[21]

In 2009, Encana separated its oil-sands business into Cenovus Energy. It expanded its U.S. oil and gas portfolio through acquisitions in the Eagle Ford and Permian basins in 2014, then completed its acquisition of Newfield Exploration in 2019.[21]

In January 2020, Encana completed a U.S. domicile reorganization and changed its name to Ovintiv Inc.; its shares began trading under the Ovintiv name later that month. In 2023, the company added Midland Basin assets and sold its Bakken assets. It expanded its Montney position with an acquisition completed in January 2025, and completed its acquisition of NuVista Energy in February 2026.[25] [21]
