Company history
Otter Tail Power Company was incorporated in Minnesota on July 5, 1907, and began supplying electricity in April 1909, when its Dayton Hollow hydroelectric plant came online. In 1941, it merged with Union Public Service Company, expanding its utility operations.[38][39][40]
The company broadened beyond electric utility operations through manufacturing acquisitions, including BTD Manufacturing and Northern Pipe Products in 1995, Vinyltech in 2000, and T.O. Plastics in 2001. That year, shareholders changed the parent company’s name to Otter Tail Corporation, while the utility retained the Otter Tail Power Company name; a 2009 reorganization established the present parent-subsidiary structure.[28][41][42]
From 2011, Otter Tail pursued a strategic transformation that included exiting its construction segment and concentrating nonutility investment on manufacturing. In 2015, it sold Aevenia, its energy and electrical construction business, and BTD acquired Impulse Manufacturing. In 2023, Otter Tail Power completed its purchase of the 62.4-megawatt Ashtabula III wind facility, previously contracted under a power-purchase agreement.[43][44][45][46] [38][39][40][28][41][42][43][44][45][46]
