Overview
ORIX Corporation is a Japan-based financial services and investment group founded in 1964. Its businesses span financing and leasing, real estate, private equity investment, insurance, banking, asset management, aircraft and ships, and environment and energy services. It operates across Japan, the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.[1][2]
ORIX states its purpose as combining innovative thinking and diverse expertise to find pathways to impact in a changing world. The group operates in around 30 countries and regions and reported 33,982 employees and ¥2.875 trillion in consolidated revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2025.[3][4] [5][6][7][1][2][3][4]
Products & services
ORIX offers equipment leasing and financing to businesses, alongside automobile leasing, rental and car-sharing services. Through ORIX Rentec, it rents electronic measuring instruments, scientific and environmental analysis equipment, computers, tablets, smartphones and medical devices; it also sells used equipment.[8][9][10]
Its financial products include life insurance covering medical expenses, cancer, death and specified diseases, as well as deposits, investment trusts and loans through ORIX Bank. ORIX also provides aircraft leasing and asset management, ship financing and investment, and real-estate development, rental and asset management. Its property operations include hotels, inns and aquariums.[11][12][13][14]
In energy and environmental services, ORIX develops renewable-power generation, retails electricity, provides energy-saving services and sells solar panels. It also offers waste-management and recycling services.[15] [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]
Geographic presence
ORIX is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and operates across Japan, other parts of Asia, the Americas, Europe and Australia. Its overseas businesses are organized in regional groupings that include ORIX USA, ORIX Europe, and Asia and Australia. The group has a presence in approximately 30 countries and regions.[16][17][18]
Japan is its largest revenue market. In the fiscal year ended March 2025, ORIX reported ¥2,125.2 billion of revenue in Japan (73.9% of the total), ¥270.1 billion in the Americas (9.4%), and ¥479.5 billion in other markets (16.7%). The Americas primarily comprises the United States; “other” primarily comprises Asia, Europe and Australasia. ORIX does not separately report revenue for those latter regions in this geographic breakdown.[19][20][21] [17][18][19][19][19][19][20][21][16]
Business segments
ORIX reports ten business segments. Corporate Financial Services and Maintenance Leasing provides corporate finance, automobile leasing and rentals of equipment such as electronic instruments. Real Estate covers development, property and facility operations, and asset management. PE Investment and Concession includes private-equity investments and the operation of airports and water businesses. Environment and Energy covers renewable power, electricity retail, energy-saving services and recycling. Insurance comprises life insurance.[22]
Banking and Credit comprises banking and consumer finance. Aircraft and Ships includes aircraft investment and management, alongside ship finance and investment. The three geographically defined segments are ORIX USA, which conducts finance, investment and asset management in the Americas; ORIX Europe, which manages global equity and fixed-income assets; and Asia and Australia, which conducts finance and investment businesses in those regions.[22]
For the fiscal year ended March 2025, approximate shares of total *segment profit* were PE Investment and Concession 18%, Corporate Financial Services and Maintenance Leasing 17%, Insurance 14%, Real Estate 13%, Aircraft and Ships 12%, ORIX Europe 8%, ORIX USA 7%, Asia and Australia 6%, and Banking and Credit 5%. Environment and Energy reported a loss equivalent to about −1% of the total. These are profit shares, not revenue shares, and may vary substantially between years.[23] [22][23]
Company history
ORIX was established in Osaka in April 1964 as Orient Leasing Co., Ltd., backed by trading companies and banks. It listed on the Osaka Securities Exchange in 1970 and established its first overseas subsidiary in Hong Kong in 1971. As its activities expanded beyond domestic leasing, the company adopted the name ORIX Corporation in 1989.[24][25]
ORIX entered aircraft financing in 1978 and established an aircraft-leasing company in Ireland in 1991. It listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1998. Later milestones included its 2013 acquisition of a controlling stake in Dutch asset manager Robeco and its 2018 purchase of a 30% stake in aircraft lessor Avolon.[13][24][26][27] [24][25][13][26][27]
