Old Dominion Freight Line’s principal service is less-than-truckload (LTL) freight transportation, offered on regional, inter-regional and national routes. LTL service combines shipments from multiple customers on a truck and moves them through service centers, where freight can be transferred to trucks serving similar destinations. More than 98% of the company’s revenue has historically come from transporting LTL shipments; this is a historical characterization, not a percentage reported for a specific year.[8][9]

Company history

Earl and Lillian Congdon founded Old Dominion Freight Line in 1934, operating a single truck between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia. The company was incorporated in Virginia in 1950.[14][15]

Old Dominion sold shares to the public in 1991. In 2001, it acquired equipment and service centers from Carter & Sons Freightways, adding terminals and routes to its network.[16][17] In 2018, Greg Gantt succeeded David Congdon as president and chief executive officer; David became executive chairman, succeeding Earl Congdon.[18] [15]+4
