Overview
Nucor Corporation is a North American steelmaker that manufactures steel and fabricated steel products and supplies raw materials used in steelmaking. Its three business segments are steel mills, steel products and raw materials. Its mills produce sheet, plate, structural and bar steel, while its downstream businesses make products including steel joists, decking, reinforcing steel and metal building systems. Its raw-materials operations process and broker scrap and produce direct reduced iron.[1][2][3][4]
Most of Nucor’s facilities and customers are in North America, alongside international trading and sales operations. Products & services
Nucor’s steel-mill products include hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized sheet; plate; wide-flange beams, H-piling and sheet piling; and bars such as concrete reinforcing bar, merchant bar and engineered special bar quality steel. It produces these products principally through electric-arc-furnace melting, continuous casting and rolling. Its published plate range includes thicknesses from 3/16 to 18 inches and widths from 48 to 170 inches.[8][9]
Its downstream products include steel joists and joist girders, roof and floor deck, fabricated rebar, hollow structural sections and tubing, electrical conduit, fasteners, grating, wire mesh, metal building systems, insulated metal panels, racking, overhead doors, solar torque tubes and utility structures. Services include rebar fabrication, project planning, customization and logistics. Its raw-material activities supply direct reduced iron and process or broker scrap and other metallic inputs.[10][11][12]
In 2024, steel mills accounted for approximately 61% of external sales, steel products for 33% and raw materials for 6%; these are segment shares rather than sales percentages for individual products.[13] [8][10][12][13][13][13][13][9][11]
Geographic presence
Nucor is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its operating footprint is concentrated in the United States but extends into Canada, Mexico and Trinidad. Its steel-products segment reports 91 operating facilities across 39 U.S. states, 28 in Canada and two in Mexico, in addition to facilities counted elsewhere in its operations. Its raw-materials segment reports 84 facilities across 19 U.S. states and one in Point Lisas, Trinidad; Nucor operates direct-reduced-iron plants in Trinidad and Louisiana.[14][15][16][17]
Nucor sells steel-mill products primarily to service centers, fabricators and manufacturers across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its principal steel-mill locations include Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico, alongside numerous U.S. sites. Business segments
Nucor reports three business segments. **Steel mills** produces carbon and alloy steel in sheet, bar, structural and plate forms and includes steel trading and rebar distribution. It accounted for approximately 62% of 2025 net sales to external customers. **Steel products** makes downstream products including joists and deck, fabricated reinforcing steel, building systems, tubular products, racking and piling; it accounted for approximately 32%. **Raw materials** comprises scrap brokerage and processing, direct-reduced iron facilities and natural gas production, and accounted for approximately 7%.[4][20]
Nucor also discloses sales by product category rather than as additional business segments. Its largest categories in 2025 were sheet steel (approximately 28% of external net sales) and bar steel (approximately 18%), followed by structural steel (8%) and plate steel (8%).[21] [4][20][20][20][20][21][21][21][21][21]
Company history
Nucor traces its origins to the REO automobile business founded by Ransom E. Olds in the early 20th century. After a series of corporate changes, the business adopted the name Nuclear Corporation of America in 1955. It acquired steel-joist maker Vulcraft in 1962 and hired Ken Iverson to run it, beginning a shift toward steel. The company began producing steel at its Darlington, South Carolina, mill in 1969 and changed its name to Nucor Corporation in 1972.[22][23][24][25][26]
Nucor expanded its steelmaking methods with a thin-slab caster at its Crawfordsville, Indiana, mill in 1989. Later acquisitions broadened its operations: it bought metals recycler and broker David J. Joseph Company in 2008, the Gallatin sheet mill in Kentucky in 2014, and Independence Tube in 2016.
