Updated

Overview

Nu Holdings Ltd. operates a digital financial services platform serving customers in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Founded in 2013 in Brazil, it offers products for spending, saving, borrowing, investing and protection, including payment cards, accounts, loans, investments and insurance. Its stated mission is to “fight complexity to empower people” through accessible financial products.[1]

At the end of 2025, Nu had approximately 131 million customers across its three markets and 10,027 full-time personnel. It reported revenue of approximately US$15.8 billion for 2025.[8] [1]

Products & services

Nu Holdings’ principal consumer products are app-managed credit cards and digital accounts. In Brazil, its Mastercard credit card has no annual fee, while NuAccount supports Pix transfers, bill payments and ATM withdrawals. Money Boxes (Caixinhas) let customers set aside funds and track their returns; Nu also offers investments through its digital brokerage. Its premium Ultravioleta card adds a cashback-based rewards program.[11]

Nu offers unsecured personal loans with in-app applications, real-time underwriting, account disbursement and tools to manage or renegotiate installments, alongside secured lending products. Its insurance range includes NuLife policies that customers can customize and purchase in the app, as well as mobile and auto coverage. For businesses, its SME account includes a prepaid card, transfers and payment-collection tools.[16]

Payment and commerce services include NuPay, which lets customers authorize purchases from partner merchants in the app and pay from their account or on credit, including installments. NuMarketplace brings partner retail offers into the app. NuTravel combines travel booking with access to a multi-currency account, while NuCel is a mobile service offered through a partnership with Claro. Beyond Brazil, Nu offers credit cards and digital deposit or savings accounts in Mexico and Colombia; Colombia’s Cuenta Nu provides digital access, transfers and liquidity without a minimum balance.[20]

In 2024, credit-card interest represented 33.0% of Nu’s revenue and credit-card interchange fees represented 12.0%.[27] [11]

Geographic presence

Nu Holdings’ principal customer-facing markets are Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. It also has IT and business-support operations in Uruguay and the United States.[28] In 2024, Brazil accounted for $8.410 billion, or approximately 92.9%, of the $9.051 billion in its geographically attributed revenue table; Mexico contributed $523 million (5.8%) and Colombia $112 million (1.2%).[29] These percentages use the geographic table’s total, which differs from Nu’s consolidated revenue total.[29][30]

Nu lists offices in São Paulo, including two designated headquarters sites, as well as Querétaro, Mexico City, Bogotá, Durham and Montevideo.[31] It reported approximately 8,700 full-time employees at the end of 2024, without a country-level employee breakdown in the cited disclosure.[32] [28]

Business segments

Nu Holdings reports a single operating and reportable segment. Its chief executive officer assesses performance and allocates resources for the group as a whole, rather than by country or product line. The business includes credit-card and loan interest, credit and prepaid card fees, late fees and insurance commissions, but these are not reported as separate segments.[33]

Nu also discloses a geographic revenue breakdown, which is distinct from its segment reporting. In 2025, Brazil accounted for approximately 91% of the revenue in that breakdown, Mexico 7%, and other countries 2%. The geographic measure covers specified interest and fee income and should not be treated as a split of every line in consolidated revenue.[37][38] [33]

Company history

Nubank was founded in Brazil in 2013 by David Vélez, Cristina Junqueira and Edward Wible. It launched its first product, a credit card, in 2014, followed by a digital account in 2017.[39]
