Overview

NTT is a Japan-based telecommunications and technology group whose businesses span mobile and fixed-line communications, IT services, systems integration and data centers. Its major businesses include NTT DOCOMO’s integrated ICT services, NTT DATA’s global solutions and regional communications in Japan; the group also operates in real estate and energy. Established in 1985 following the privatization of Japan’s national telecommunications provider, the company adopted the name NTT, Inc. in 2025.[1][2]

NTT describes its purpose as “Innovating a Sustainable Future for People and Planet,” using technology and partnerships to address societal needs. Its operations extend across Japan and international markets. The group reported approximately ¥13.7 trillion in operating revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2025 and has a workforce of roughly 340,000 people worldwide.[3] [1]

Products & services

NTT’s consumer communications products, offered primarily through NTT DOCOMO, include mobile connectivity and optical broadband. Its services also include digital payments, financial and content offerings. For business customers, the group provides telecommunications, systems development and other ICT solutions.[5]

NTT EAST and NTT WEST provide regional fixed-line and fiber-optic services, including FLET’S Hikari broadband and wholesale fiber access supplied through the Hikari Collaboration Model. NTT DATA’s offerings span IT consulting, software and systems development, maintenance and support, and data-center services. NTT also develops the IOWN All-Photonics Network, which uses optical paths to support high-capacity, low-latency communications; it is a network technology rather than a consumer broadband plan.[6] [5]

Geographic presence

NTT’s operations are anchored in Japan, with international activity conducted in part through NTT DATA. NTT DATA organizes its overseas business across North America, EMEAL (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America) and APAC (Asia-Pacific). It reports operations in more than 70 countries and regions.[10][11]

In an NTT DATA briefing, Japan-region net sales were approximately ¥1.76 trillion, compared with approximately ¥2.65 trillion for overseas regions. These figures describe NTT DATA, not a Japan-versus-overseas revenue split for the consolidated NTT Group.[10] [10][11]

Business segments

NTT reports four business segments: Integrated ICT, Global Solutions, Regional Communications, and Others. Integrated ICT centers on NTT DOCOMO’s mobile and other consumer and enterprise communications services; Global Solutions covers NTT DATA Group’s IT and digital services; Regional Communications covers the regional telecommunications businesses of NTT EAST and NTT WEST. Others includes real estate, energy and other businesses.[7][12]

For the fiscal year ended March 2025, Integrated ICT generated approximately ¥6.21 trillion in operating revenue, Global Solutions ¥4.64 trillion, Regional Communications ¥3.11 trillion, and Others ¥1.73 trillion. That represents roughly 40%, 30%, 20% and 11%, respectively, of the sum of segment revenues. Segment revenues include intersegment transactions, so these percentages describe the relative size of the reported segments rather than their shares of consolidated revenue.[12] [13]

Company history

NTT traces its origins to the establishment of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation in 1952. It began automobile telephone service in 1979, an early step in its mobile-communications business. The public corporation was privatized as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation in 1985, and the company listed on Japanese stock exchanges in 1987.[15]

NTT established the predecessor of NTT DATA in 1988 and transferred its mobile-communications business to the company now known as NTT DOCOMO in 1992. A major reorganization in 1999 created a holding-company structure with NTT East and NTT West as regional operators and NTT Communications as a long-distance operator. NTT later made DOCOMO a wholly owned subsidiary in 2020. In 2025, the parent company changed its English corporate name to NTT, Inc.[19] [15]
