Products & services
NorthWestern Energy’s customer offerings are regulated electric and natural-gas utility services rather than separately branded products. Its electric service includes retail supply and transmission; South Dakota retail tariffs include dual-fuel, interruptible, and special all-electric-heating rates for residential, commercial, and industrial customers.[6][7] Its natural-gas services include production, storage, transmission, and distribution in Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska, with gas delivered to retail customers and transportation service provided to third-party marketers and large end users.[8][9] In South Dakota, transportation service includes daily customer nominations, usage monitoring, and balancing against supply agreements.[6]
For the year ended December 31, 2025, electric and gas segment operating revenues were $1,269.956 million and $340.603 million, respectively—about 78.9% and 21.1% of total segment operating revenue.[10] For the six months ended June 30, 2026, the corresponding revenues were $686.308 million electric and $203.861 million gas, or about 77.1% and 22.9% of the combined total.[11] These figures represent segment revenues, not sales of distinct product lines. Company history
NorthWestern’s history dates to 1923, when Northwestern Public Service Company was formed by the merger of two Nebraska and two South Dakota electric utilities. Over the following years it acquired local energy companies across the region; in 1941 it sold its Nebraska electric utility holdings and used the proceeds to expand its natural-gas operations in three Nebraska cities.[20]
The company adopted the name NorthWestern Corporation in 1998. Its 2002 purchase of Montana Power Company’s transmission and distribution system marked a major expansion into Montana. In 2023, NorthWestern Energy Group, Inc. became the holding-company parent of NorthWestern Corporation. In 2026, the company further expanded its generation portfolio by acquiring additional ownership interests in Colstrip Units 3 and 4.[21][22][23][24] [22][23][24][20][21]
