Overview
NKT is a Danish energy-sector company that designs and manufactures power cables and related accessories and services. Its products span low-, medium- and high-voltage applications, supporting electricity transmission and distribution and the broader energy transition [1]. The company describes its purpose as “We connect a greener world” [2].
NKT operates across Transmission, Distribution, Grid Solutions and Accessories, with locations in more than 16 countries and manufacturing sites across Europe [3][4]. Founded in 1891, the company reported 2025 revenue of EUR 3,565 million and an average of 6,154 employees in continuing operations [5][6]. [2][5][6][1][3][4]
Products & services
NKT’s high-voltage portfolio includes AC and DC cable systems for onshore and offshore transmission, including interconnectors and offshore wind connections. Its offering spans engineering, manufacture, installation and project delivery. NKT identifies 525 kV extruded XLPE HVDC systems as a capability for high-capacity transmission; in Q1 2026 it announced a turnkey 525 kV HVDC project with an approximately 680 km route comprising onshore and offshore sections.[7][8][9][10]
For electricity distribution and construction, NKT supplies medium- and low-voltage power cables. Its low-voltage range includes 1 kV cables, building wires, flexible and control cables, and telecom energy cables. Examples include N2XH 0.6/1 kV for fixed indoor installations and YAKXS 0.6/1 kV for permanent indoor or outdoor installations, including use in soil and concrete.[11][12][13][14][15]
NKT also supplies cable accessories and grid solutions. Its high-voltage accessories include joints, switchgear and transformer connectors, outdoor terminations and tailored solutions for 52–550 kV systems; medium-voltage products include joints and separable connectors. One named product is the Adaptive Rigid Seajoint, a modular joint for common three-phase submarine cables up to 300 kV. Services include cable-system engineering and installation, jointing, termination, project management and testing, as well as inspection, maintenance, spare-parts management and planned or emergency repair.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] [7][8][9][11][12][13][16][17][18][19][10][14][15][20][21][22][23][24]
Geographic presence
NKT’s operations and workforce are concentrated in Europe, with production sites in Denmark, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the UK. High-voltage manufacturing is centered at Karlskrona, Sweden, and Cologne, Germany; accessories production is also located in Alingsås, Sweden, and Nordenham, Germany. NKT’s European activity includes projects and market positions in Denmark, Germany and the UK.[25][26][27][28][29]
At year-end 2025, NKT had 6,627 employees. The largest country workforces were Sweden (2,424; about 36.6% of the total), Germany (1,490; 22.5%), the Czech Republic (649; 9.8%), Portugal (481; 7.3%), Denmark (456; 6.9%) and Poland (426; 6.4%). Other reported locations included India (223), Lithuania (196), the UK (103) and the Netherlands (93). NKT also identifies offices in Chennai, Mumbai and Gurugram, India.[30][31][32]
NKT does not disclose revenue by country or region in the available reporting; its Q1 2026 revenue figures are presented by business line rather than geography.[33] [26][27][28][29][30][33][25][31][32]
Business segments
NKT reports three operating segments: Solutions, Applications, and Service & Accessories. Solutions focuses on high-voltage AC and DC power-cable solutions for offshore and onshore projects, including project execution and installation; Applications supplies cables for power distribution and other grid applications, as well as lower-voltage markets; Service & Accessories provides power-cable services and high- and medium-voltage accessories.[34][35][36]
On an approximate 2025 gross segment-revenue basis, Solutions contributed about 52%, Applications about 39%, and Service & Accessories about 9%. These estimates use reported segment amounts of approximately €1.95 billion, €1.45 billion, and €317 million, respectively; they are directional shares of combined segment revenue, not percentages of consolidated revenue.[37] [34][35][36][37]
Company history
Founded in Copenhagen in 1891 by engineer H.P. Prior to make wire for power distribution and telephones, NKT was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in 1898. Its cable history includes a 1954 Gotland project identified by the company as the first mass-impregnated HVDC submarine cable link, and delivery in 1973 of what it describes as the world’s first extruded high-voltage submarine AC cable, for the Sweden–Åland Islands connection.[4][38][39]
NKT launched PVC- and halogen-free cables in 1995 and acquired German cable maker Felten & Guilleaume in 1999. It expanded its power-cable operations through the 2013 acquisition of Ericsson’s power-cable business and, in 2017, the completion of its acquisition of ABB’s high-voltage cable-systems business. That year, NKT and Nilfisk became independently listed companies following a demerger. In 2022, NKT acquired UK fire-resistant cable maker Ventcroft and agreed to sell NKT Photonics; the sale to Hamamatsu Photonics was completed in 2024.[4][40][41][42][43][44][45][46] [42][45][4][38][39][40][41][43][44][46]
