Company history

Nexstar Media Group was founded in 1996 by broadcaster Perry A. Sook, beginning with the purchase of WYOU in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It expanded through station acquisitions, including Quorum Broadcasting in 2003, and went public that year.[5][24]

The company continued building its station portfolio in the 2010s, including a 2012 transaction involving stations from Newport Television and acquisitions from Communications Corporation of America, Meredith and Landmark in 2015.[25][26]

Nexstar agreed to acquire Media General in 2016 and completed the deal in January 2017, adopting the Nexstar Media Group name. It completed its acquisition of Tribune Media in September 2019, a major expansion that made it the largest U.S. local television broadcast and digital media company, according to the company.[27]

In October 2022, Nexstar acquired a 75% ownership interest in The CW network. Its merger with TEGNA closed on March 19, 2026, adding 64 full-power television stations and two radio stations across 51 markets, along with other media businesses.[30][31] [31]
