Company history

News Corp traces its roots to an Australian newspaper business established in the 1920s, associated with Sir Keith Murdoch and Rupert Murdoch [23]. In 1964, Rupert Murdoch launched The Australian as a national daily newspaper [24]. The company later expanded internationally, including its 2007 acquisition of Dow Jones [25]. In 2012, it acquired Consolidated Media Holdings, expanding its Australian media interests [26].

On June 28, 2013, the publishing and information businesses separated from the former News Corporation, which became 21st Century Fox; the newly independent News Corp began operating as a distinct company [27][28]. At launch, Rupert Murdoch was Executive Chairman and Robert Thomson was CEO [29]. In 2014, News Corp completed its acquisition of Move, Inc., operator of realtor.com® [30]. Rupert Murdoch announced in 2023 that he would step down as chairman, with Lachlan Murdoch to become sole Chair following the annual meeting [31]. In April 2025, News Corp completed the sale of Foxtel Group to DAZN [32][33]. [26]
