Business segments
NewMarket reports two operating segments. Petroleum additives develops and supplies lubricant and fuel additives; specialty materials supplies materials for solid rocket motors used in space launch and defense, aerospace and defense propellants, and propulsion products for satellites and space probes. “All other” is disclosed separately, not as a reportable segment, and includes the antiknock compounds business and certain Ethyl contract manufacturing and related services.[27][28]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, petroleum additives contributed approximately 90.7% of net sales and 89.1% of combined segment operating profit; specialty materials contributed 8.8% of sales and 10.9% of segment operating profit. “All other” represented about 0.4% of sales.[29][29][29][29][29][29][29]
For the year ended December 31, 2025, petroleum additives contributed approximately 93.0% of net sales and 91.7% of combined segment operating profit; specialty materials contributed 6.7% of sales and 8.3% of segment operating profit. “All other” represented about 0.3% of sales. Operating-profit percentages are shares of total segment operating profit, excluding “all other.” [30][30][30][30][30][30][30] [27][28][29][29][29][29][29][29][29][30][30][30][30][30][30][30]
Company history
NewMarket traces its origins to Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company, formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1887. Its later fuel-additives business began with a chemicals venture launched in 1921 to address engine knock, followed by a General Motors–Standard Oil of New Jersey joint venture in 1923. In 1962, Albemarle Paper acquired Ethyl Corporation and adopted the Ethyl name, shifting the company’s focus from paper manufacturing to chemicals.[31]
Between 1989 and 1994, the company distributed Tredegar Industries, First Colony Corporation and Albemarle Corporation to shareholders. In 2004, a holding-company reorganization made NewMarket the parent of Ethyl; the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as NewMarket that June.[32][33][34]
NewMarket expanded into specialty materials with its January 2024 acquisition of AMPAC Intermediate Holdings, the parent of American Pacific Corporation, for approximately $697 million. In October 2025, it acquired Calca Solutions, a producer of hydrazine products.[35][36][1][2] [35][36][1][2][31][32][33][34]
