Company history

Michael Minhong Yu founded Beijing New Oriental School on November 16, 1993, initially focusing on English-language teaching and test preparation. The group was established in 2001 as the business expanded beyond its original school.[25][26]

New Oriental completed its U.S. IPO and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on September 7, 2006. In March 2019, its online-education subsidiary Koolearn Technology listed in Hong Kong; New Oriental itself later began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on November 9, 2020.[27]

Chenggang Zhou became CEO in September 2016, succeeding Yu in that role, while Yu remained chairman. China’s 2021 restrictions on academic tutoring for compulsory-education students prompted a significant shift in New Oriental’s activities. In December 2021, Koolearn began livestreaming commerce; it established the East Buy e-commerce platform in fiscal 2022, marking a diversification beyond education.[31]
