Company history

NatWest Group’s history traces back to the Royal Bank of Scotland, founded by royal charter in Edinburgh in 1727. Its modern corporate lineage developed through mergers: Commercial Bank of Scotland and National Bank of Scotland combined in 1959 to form National Commercial Bank of Scotland, which merged with the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1969. Separately, National Provincial Bank and Westminster Bank agreed to merge in 1968, forming National Westminster Bank in 1970.[22]

The group’s parent company was incorporated in 1968 as National & Commercial Banking Group and renamed The Royal Bank of Scotland Group in 1979. It completed its acquisition of National Westminster Bank in 2000 and joined the consortium that acquired ABN AMRO in 2007. During the financial crisis, the UK Government became the group’s majority shareholder in 2008. The parent company was renamed NatWest Group plc in 2020; in 2025, the Government’s shareholding fell to zero, returning the group to full private ownership.[25] [22]
