Company history
National Bank of Canada traces its origins to Banque Nationale, founded in 1859.[1] In 1924, Banque Nationale merged with Banque d’Hochelaga to form Banque Canadienne Nationale. Its 1979 merger with Provincial Bank of Canada created the present-day National Bank of Canada.
The bank later expanded beyond its original Quebec base. In 2019, it became the sole shareholder of Cambodia’s ABA Bank.[32] In 2025, it completed the acquisition of Canadian Western Bank, a major expansion of its Canadian banking business.[33] [1][32][33]
