National Australia Bank operates primarily in Australia and New Zealand, with additional operations across Asia, the United Kingdom, continental Europe and the United States. Its New Zealand banking business operates through Bank of New Zealand.[26][27]

In the financial year ended September 2025, NAB reported geographic Group income of A$16.4 billion from Australia, A$3.2 billion from New Zealand and A$1.7 billion from other international markets. Before inter-geographic eliminations, those regions accounted for approximately 77%, 15% and 8% of Group income, respectively.[8] [26]

Business segments

National Australia Bank reports five segments. In FY2025, Business and Private Banking contributed approximately 41% of group net operating income. It serves small and medium-sized businesses, specialist industries and private banking clients, including through JBWere. Personal Banking contributed approximately 22% and provides home loans, deposits, cards and personal loans through branches, digital channels, lenders and brokers.[16]

Corporate and Institutional Banking contributed approximately 20% of net operating income, serving customers with complex financing, markets, transactional banking and payments needs. New Zealand Banking contributed approximately 15% and provides personal and business banking in New Zealand.[4]

Corporate Functions and Other accounted for the remaining approximately 2% of net operating income. It includes ubank, shared support functions and group-wide consolidation eliminations; it is not solely a customer-facing banking segment. Percentages are calculated from reported FY2025 segment net operating income and rounded.[29][9] [16]

Company history

National Australia Bank traces its origins to the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, established in 1834, and the National Bank of Australasia, established in Melbourne in 1858. The two banks merged on 1 October 1981 to form NAB.[30]

NAB expanded internationally in 1987 by acquiring Clydesdale Bank, Northern Bank and National Irish Bank. It subsequently acquired Yorkshire Bank in 1990 and the Bank of New Zealand in 1992.[33] It broadened its wealth-management activities through the acquisition of MLC in 2000.[34] NAB later reduced its overseas and wealth-management interests, demerging its Clydesdale and Yorkshire banking operations in 2016 and completing the sale of MLC Wealth in 2021.[35][36] [30]
