Updated

Overview

Murphy Oil Corporation is an independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company. It produces crude oil and condensate, natural gas, and natural gas liquids, with operations in the United States, Canada, and Brunei and exploration interests in other regions, including Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, and Vietnam.[1] The company describes its purpose as “providing energy that empowers people.” [5]

For FY2025, Murphy reported $2.690 billion in revenue from customer sales and worldwide production of 188,682 barrels of oil equivalent per day; it reported 813 employees at year-end.[6] [1]

Products & services

Murphy Oil’s reported products are crude oil and condensate, natural gas liquids (NGLs), and natural gas. Its FY2025 production averaged 93,353 barrels per day of crude oil and condensate, 10,827 barrels per day of NGLs, and 507,950 thousand cubic feet per day of natural gas [9]. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, reported averages were 91,618 barrels per day of crude oil and condensate, 11,000 barrels per day of NGLs, and 449,408 thousand cubic feet per day of natural gas [10]. The reviewed disclosures identify these commodity categories but do not specify crude grades or product quality specifications [11].

In FY2025, crude oil and NGL sales together represented approximately 85.8% of reported oil-and-gas revenue, with natural gas contributing 14.2%; the filing combines crude oil and NGL revenue [12]. For the first half of 2026, sales to customers were approximately 86.1% crude oil and condensate, 2.5% NGLs, and 11.5% natural gas [13]. Murphy’s capabilities information describes produced oil and gas being transported to refineries by pipeline, truck, or railcar; it does not establish these as separate transportation services offered to customers [14]. [9]

Geographic presence

Murphy Oil’s producing operations are in the United States, Canada, and Brunei. Its U.S. onshore operations are in the Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas; in 2025, Eagle Ford accounted for about 35% of U.S. hydrocarbon production. U.S. offshore operations are in the Gulf of America and accounted for about 65% of U.S. hydrocarbon production that year. In Canada, the company operates onshore in the Tupper Montney area of northeast British Columbia and the Kaybob Duvernay area of Alberta, and has offshore interests in Hibernia and Terra Nova in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin off Newfoundland and Labrador.[3]

Murphy also conducts exploration activities in Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, and Vietnam; these are exploration areas, not identified here as producing regions. Its 2025 production-revenue reporting is organized by U.S. and Canadian onshore and offshore areas, plus “Other”; the reviewed sources do not provide a breakdown by customer destination.[19]

The company’s principal executive offices are in Houston, Texas. At year-end 2025, it reported 813 employees—542 office-based and 271 field employees—with no geographic allocation of staff reported.[22][23] [3]

Business segments

Murphy Oil reports three geographic exploration and production (E&P) segments: **United States, Canada, and Other** (all other countries). Segment revenue is primarily from sales of crude oil, natural gas liquids and natural gas. The company also reports corporate items separately for reconciliation; these are not an additional geographic E&P segment.[24][25]

The **United States** segment includes Gulf of America offshore operations and the Eagle Ford Shale; **Canada** includes Tupper Montney, Kaybob Duvernay and Offshore Canada. In fiscal 2025, production revenue was approximately **$2.15 billion (80.1%)** for the United States, **$530 million (19.7%)** for Canada and **$5.7 million (0.2%)** for Other, out of $2.69 billion total production revenue. Shares are calculated from reported geographic production revenue.[26]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, the latest reported period, the corresponding mix was approximately **79.4% United States**, **20.4% Canada** and **0.2% Other**. Murphy’s reporting does not specify a location for the small Other category in the cited segment information.[27][28] [24]

Company history

Murphy Oil’s roots trace to Charles Haywood Murphy Sr., who moved from lumber and banking into oil and gas and acquired land around El Dorado, Arkansas, before the Smackover Field discovery. The company was incorporated in Louisiana as Murphy Corporation in 1950.[29][30]

The company introduced its “Mr. Charlie” offshore drilling barge in 1954, became a publicly traded company in 1956, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1961. Murphy entered Malaysia in 1999, beginning a major period of international exploration and production; production at its Kikeh deepwater development began in 2007.[29]

In 2013, Murphy separated its U.S. retail business by spinning off Murphy USA, completing the distribution in September and refocusing the company on exploration and production. It later expanded its Gulf of Mexico deepwater portfolio through a 2018 transaction with Petrobras America and a 2019 agreement to acquire assets from LLOG. Eric M. Hambly succeeded Roger W. Jenkins as president and CEO effective January 1, 2025.[32] [35]
