Overview

Morgan Stanley is a global financial-services firm serving corporations, governments, institutions and individuals. Its businesses span investment banking and securities, wealth management, and investment management. The firm organizes its operations into three segments: Institutional Securities, Wealth Management, and Investment Management, covering services such as advisory, trading, investment advice, financial planning, and asset management.[1]

Founded in 1935, Morgan Stanley describes its longstanding purpose as doing “first-class business in a first-class way.” The company reports a presence in more than 40 countries and over 80,000 employees; it reported net revenue of $70.645 billion for fiscal 2025.[2] [4]

Products & services

Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities offerings include investment banking and strategic advice, capital-markets services, sales and trading, prime brokerage, lending and financing, risk-management solutions, and research. The company reports revenues by segment and category, including investment banking, trading, commissions and fees, but does not provide product-specific performance percentages in the cited reporting [5].

Wealth Management serves clients through advisor-led, self-directed, and workplace offerings. Services include brokerage, investment advice, custody, financial and wealth planning, cash management, banking, lending, retirement plans, and stock-plan administration. Named offerings include E*TRADE for self-directed investing, Core Portfolios for automated investing with professional portfolio management, and Morgan Stanley at Work, which includes equity-plan and cap-table services [9].

Investment Management offers traditional asset management and alternatives, including equity, fixed income, liquidity, managed futures, merchant banking, and real-estate strategies. Parametric Radius is a multi-asset technology platform supporting custom portfolios, direct indexing, and tax management. Parametric’s Tax Optimized Ladder Strategy offers customized municipal, corporate, and Treasury bond portfolios aligned to clients’ tax profiles, with systematic tax-loss harvesting available as an option. Morgan Stanley reports Investment Management revenues by segment categories rather than by individual named product [6] [5]

Geographic presence

Morgan Stanley reports net revenue across three regions: Americas, EMEA, and Asia. For FY2025, net revenue was $52.897 billion in the Americas (about 74.9% of total), $8.328 billion in EMEA (about 11.8%), and $9.420 billion in Asia (about 13.3%), out of $70.645 billion total. The filing presents revenue by region rather than by individual country.[18] The company reported 83,000 employees worldwide at December 31, 2025; it does not provide a regional or country-level employee breakdown in the cited data.[19]

Morgan Stanley’s global office directory groups its locations across the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Japan. The company identifies New York as its world headquarters, London as its European headquarters, and Hong Kong as its Asia-Pacific headquarters excluding Japan.[20] [18]

Business segments

Morgan Stanley reports three business segments. Institutional Securities combines investment banking and markets activities, including strategic advice, capital raising, distribution and investing, lending and financing, risk-management solutions, and research. Wealth Management serves individual investors, businesses, and institutions through Advisor-Led, Self-Directed, and Workplace channels, with brokerage and advisory services, custody and cash management, financial planning, stock-plan and retirement services, and securities-based lending. Investment Management includes Parametric, alternatives, and fixed income.[5]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, net revenues were $21.761 billion for Institutional Securities, $17.375 billion for Wealth Management, and $3.181 billion for Investment Management. Against consolidated net revenues of $41.928 billion, those figures represent approximately 51.9%, 41.4%, and 7.6%, respectively.[26] The segment amounts total $42.317 billion before intersegment, corporate, and other eliminations, so the segment percentages add to more than 100%.[26] [5]

Company history

Morgan Stanley was founded in New York on September 16, 1935, by Henry S. Morgan and Harold R. Stanley. During the 1970s, it expanded beyond investment banking into sales and trading, research, mergers and acquisitions, and private wealth management, and established offices in Tokyo and London. It completed its transition from a partnership to a corporation by 1975 and went public in 1986.[27]

In 1997, Morgan Stanley merged with Dean Witter, Discover & Co., combining its institutional securities business with a major retail brokerage and card business. It spun off Discover Financial Services in 2007. In 2008, it became a bank holding company and announced a $9 billion investment by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. In 2009, Morgan Stanley and Citi combined their wealth-management businesses in a joint venture; Morgan Stanley acquired Citi’s remaining stake in 2013. Subsequent acquisitions included Solium Capital in 2019, E*TRADE in 2020, and Eaton Vance in 2021.[33] [27]
