Business segments

Moody’s Corporation reports two segments in its 2025 Form 10-K. Moody’s Investors Service (MIS) provides credit ratings, research and risk analysis for debt issuers and investors, covering corporate, financial-institution and governmental obligations as well as structured-finance securities. MIS generated $4.119 billion of 2025 external revenue, approximately 53% of consolidated revenue.[22]

Moody’s Analytics (MA) provides data, research, analytics and workflow tools used by financial-services, corporate and public-sector customers for risk assessment, business relationship management, and regulatory compliance and reporting. MA generated $3.599 billion of external revenue, approximately 47% of consolidated revenue. Its business lines are Decision Solutions, focused on banking, insurance and know-your-customer workflows; Research & Insights; and Data & Information.[23]

The company also disaggregates revenue below its two reportable segments: MA reports the three business lines above, while MIS presents revenue by corporate finance, structured finance, financial institutions, public, project and infrastructure finance, and other operations. These are revenue categories within the reportable segments, not additional reportable segments.[14] [22]

Company history

Moody’s roots date to 1900, when John Moody began publishing a manual of company and securities information. In 1909, he introduced systematic ratings of railroad bonds, extending the work from financial publishing into credit assessment; the ratings later expanded beyond railroads.[27][28]

After operating within The Dun & Bradstreet Corporation, Moody’s became an independent public company on September 30, 2000. It broadened its offerings with the 2002 acquisition of quantitative credit-risk firm KMV and the 2005 acquisition of economic research provider Economy.com; in 2007, it brought these and other non-rating businesses together under Moody’s Analytics.[29]

Moody’s expanded into business data, environmental, social and governance assessments, climate analysis, catastrophe risk modeling and compliance through acquisitions including Bureau van Dijk (2017), Vigeo Eiris and Four Twenty Seven (2019), RMS (2021) and kompany (2022). Raymond W. McDaniel Jr. became chairman and CEO in 2005; Robert Fauber succeeded him as CEO in 2021.[33] [27]
