Company history

Mettler-Toledo traces its origins to two weighing-equipment businesses: Toledo Scale Company, founded in Ohio in 1901, and Mettler Instruments, founded by Erhard Mettler in Switzerland in 1945. The businesses combined in 1989 to form Mettler-Toledo.[31][32]

In 1996, a management-led buyout took Mettler-Toledo out of Ciba-Geigy ownership. The company acquired Safeline, a metal-detection business, in 1997 and completed its initial public offering later that year. Its 2001 acquisition of Rainin Instrument added pipetting products to its laboratory-instrument business.[33] [31]
