Company history
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany traces its origins to 1668, when Friedrich Jacob Merck received permission to operate a pharmacy in Darmstadt. In 1827, Heinrich Emanuel Merck’s work led the business into industrial-scale production, helping transform it from a local pharmacy into a chemical and pharmaceutical enterprise.[64][65][66] As its export business expanded, Merck opened a branch office in New York in 1887 and founded a U.S. company there in 1890; that business was expropriated in 1917 during World War I, after which the German Merck and the later Merck & Co. remained separate companies.[67]
Merck’s modern history was reshaped by a series of major acquisitions. It announced the acquisition of Serono in 2006 and launched Merck Serono in 2007, strengthening its pharmaceuticals business.[68][69] In 2010, Merck announced and then completed the €5.1 billion purchase of Millipore, materially expanding its life science platform.[70][71] In 2015, it completed the Sigma-Aldrich acquisition for around $17 billion, which Merck described as the largest takeover in its corporate history.[72][73] [64][70][71][72][73][65][66][67][68][69]
