Company history

Willoughby M. McCormick founded the company in Baltimore in 1889, initially selling flavoring products that included root-beer extract. Its 1896 acquisition of the F.G. Emmett Spice Company marked its entry into the spice business. In 1932, McCormick introduced its “Multiple Management” approach to employee participation and management development. The 1947 acquisition of Schilling gave it coast-to-coast distribution in the United States.[2][17]

Acquisitions later extended McCormick’s geographic reach and product range. It bought France-based Ducros in 2000, strengthening its European spice business, followed by Zatarain’s in 2003 and Lawry’s in 2008. In 2017, it acquired Reckitt Benckiser’s food division, adding brands including French’s and Frank’s RedHot. McCormick added Cholula hot sauce in 2020.[18] [2]
