Products & services
Materion’s Performance Materials include beryllium and non-beryllium alloys and custom metal forms. Its products include high-performance beryllium in billet, ingot, plate, sheet, powder and custom shapes; beryllium foil and oxide ceramics; and copper- and nickel-based alloys in strip, rod and wire. Named products include ToughMet® copper-nickel-tin alloys and SupremEX® aluminum-silicon-carbide metal-matrix composites. The company also offers engineering and product-development support, including prototyping and design-specification validation.[1][5][14][6][15][16]
Electronic Materials products include advanced chemicals and specialty metals, vapor-deposition targets, microelectronics packaging, frame-lid assemblies, clad and precious-metal pre-forms, and high-temperature braze materials. These serve semiconductor, MEMS, power-management, RF, data-storage, display, solar, architectural-glass and optical-coating applications; Materion also provides precious-metal recovery and refining.[2][17][18] Precision Optics products include thin-film coatings, optical filters and assemblies, filter materials, and sputter-coated or precision-converted thin-film materials for aerospace and defense, automotive, consumer electronics, semiconductor, medical and industrial uses.[3][19][20]
For fiscal 2025, reported sales by segment were $1,010.0 million in Electronic Materials (56.5% of total), $675.9 million in Performance Materials (37.8%), and $100.7 million in Precision Optics (5.6%). These are segment shares, not individual-product shares; the reports do not provide revenue percentages by specific product.[21] [1][5][14][6][2][17][3][19][21][15][16][18][20]
Geographic presence
Materion’s FY2025 sales were geographically diversified: the United States accounted for $579.2 million (32.4%) of net sales, Asia $576.5 million (32.3%), Europe $570.6 million (31.9%), and all other regions $60.3 million (3.4%). The company reports customer geography rather than country-level sales; no individual country other than the United States represented 10% or more of sales in 2023–2025. International sales include sales from international operations and direct exports from U.S. operations.[22][23][24]
At year-end 2025, Materion listed its corporate and administrative office in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and manufacturing facilities in the United States, Germany, Liechtenstein, South Korea, England, Ireland, Malaysia, China, Singapore, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Its U.S. manufacturing locations include sites in New Mexico, New York, Utah, Ohio, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, California, and Arizona. The company also listed service, sales, and distribution centers in the United States, Germany, South Korea, China, and Japan.[25]
Materion’s website describes a workforce of more than 3,000 employees across 30 worldwide locations; a country- or region-level employee breakdown is not provided.[10][26] [22][22][22][22][23][24][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][25][10][26][10][26]
Business segments
Materion reports four segments: Performance Materials, Electronic Materials, Precision Optics, and Other. Other represents unallocated corporate costs rather than a product business.[4]
Performance Materials supplies engineered beryllium and non-beryllium alloys and metal products, and operates a bertrandite mine and refinery that produces beryllium hydroxide. Its markets include industrial, automotive, aerospace and defense, energy, consumer electronics, and life sciences.[1][5][14][27][6] Electronic Materials provides advanced chemicals, microelectronics packaging and metal products, as well as metal recovery and refining, serving semiconductor, energy, and industrial applications.[2]
Precision Optics designs and manufactures optical components, including thin-film coatings, filters, and assemblies, for markets such as aerospace and defense, automotive, consumer electronics, semiconductor, medical, and industrial.[3]
For FY2025, approximate shares of consolidated revenue were Electronic Materials 56.5% ($1,009.965 million), Performance Materials 37.8% ($675.871 million), Precision Optics 5.6% ($100.714 million), and Other 0.0% (no segment sales reported); consolidated revenue was $1,786.550 million.[21] [4][1][5][14][27][6][2][3][21]
Company history
Materion traces its origins to Brush Laboratories, founded in 1921 by Charles Brush Jr. and C. Baldwin Sawyer; its corporate predecessor, Brush Beryllium Company, was incorporated in 1931. In 1971, Brush Beryllium acquired Abex’s Wellman division and adopted the name Brush Wellman.[28] The company became publicly traded on the NYSE in 1972 and expanded its materials portfolio with the 1986 acquisition of Williams Advanced Materials.[29][28]
In 2000, Brush Wellman and related businesses were reorganized under Brush Engineered Materials; in 2011, the company adopted the Materion name.[28] Subsequent acquisitions broadened its optical and electronic materials businesses: EIS Optics in 2011, Heraeus’s high-performance target materials business in 2017, Optics Balzers in 2020, and H.C. Starck Solutions’ electronic materials business in 2021.[30][31][32][33] In 2025, Materion acquired tantalum manufacturing assets in South Korea to expand its semiconductor materials footprint in Asia.[34] [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]
