Overview
Marriott International is a global lodging and hospitality company whose portfolio spans luxury, premium, select-service, extended-stay and collection hotel brands. It principally manages hotels for owners and franchises or licenses its brands; it also offers residential and travel-related services, including Marriott Bonvoy.[1][2][3] Marriott describes its purpose as “connecting people through the power of travel.” [4]
The company operates across six reporting regions and, according to its corporate profile, in 148 countries and territories. Its portfolio exceeded 10,000 properties and 1.8 million rooms in a Q2 2026 update.[5][6][7] For fiscal 2025, Marriott reported $26.186 billion in consolidated revenue. Its reported workforce figure of approximately 745,000 associates covers managed and franchised operations globally, rather than only corporate employees.[8][9] [1][2][3][5][6][8][4][7][9]
Products & services
Marriott International’s hotel offerings span Luxury, Premium, Select and Midscale tiers, with brands positioned as either Classic or Distinctive. Examples include The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, JW Marriott, EDITION, W Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Westin, Autograph Collection, Courtyard, Fairfield, Residence Inn, Moxy, Aloft, Element and City Express. The portfolio also includes extended-stay brands such as Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites, and limited-service and essential-amenity offerings in its Midscale tier.[10][2][3]
Marriott also provides hotel owners franchise, licensing and management services. Franchisees receive the right to use brand names and systems, alongside centralized loyalty, reservations and marketing services; typical ongoing franchise royalties are 4–7% of room revenue, with some arrangements also charging up to 4% of food-and-beverage revenue. Management services can include hotel operations, staff hiring, training and supervision, and centralized administrative support; management fees typically combine a base fee tied to hotel revenue with incentive fees tied to hotel profit.[11][12][13][14]
Guest-facing services include Marriott Bonvoy, whose benefits include points earning and redemption, member rates and travel or experience rewards. Marriott’s app supports booking and trip planning, mobile check-in, Mobile Key at participating hotels, hotel chat and room-service ordering. Marriott also licenses timeshare brands to Marriott Vacations Worldwide and affiliates, and earns fees from offerings such as Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.[15][16][17][18][19][20]
Marriott’s reported fee-revenue results are presented by geographic region rather than by individual brand or product, so the cited reporting does not provide product-specific revenue percentages.[21][22] [10][2][3][11][12][13][14][15][16][21][22][17][18][19][20]
Geographic presence
Marriott International’s hotel system operated in 145 countries and territories at year-end 2025, with 9,805 properties and 1,779,936 rooms worldwide. At June 30, 2026, its reported regional footprint was 6,493 properties in the U.S. and Canada, 1,434 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), 734 in Greater China, and 763 in Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC). The company also presents Caribbean and Latin America as a separate region in its 2025 geographic breakdown.[23][24][3]
Marriott’s 2025 net fee revenues by reportable segment were $2.921 billion for U.S. and Canada, $621 million for EMEA, $260 million for Greater China, and $370 million for APEC—approximately 70.0%, 14.9%, 6.2%, and 8.9%, respectively, of the four-segment subtotal. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, the corresponding figures were $1.635 billion, $281 million, $136 million, and $187 million, or approximately 73.0%, 12.5%, 6.1%, and 8.4% of that period’s four-segment subtotal. These are shares of net fee revenues for the reported segments, not total company revenue; Caribbean and Latin America is included in “Unallocated corporate and other,” rather than reported as a separate segment.[25][26][22]
Marriott’s principal executive offices are in Bethesda, Maryland. Its hotel-system footprint is predominantly franchised or licensed and managed rather than owned: at June 30, 2026, the systemwide classification included 7,939 franchised, licensed or other properties, 1,947 managed properties, and 50 owned or leased properties.[27][28] [23][24][3][25][26][22][27][28]
Business segments
Marriott reports four geographic reportable segments: U.S. & Canada, Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA), Greater China, and Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC). Based on FY2025 net fee revenue of $4.172 billion, their approximate contributions were U.S. & Canada 70.0% ($2.921 billion), EMEA 14.9% ($621 million), APEC 8.9% ($370 million), and Greater China 6.2% ($260 million). These percentages are calculated from reported segment net fee revenues.[25]
On segment profit, the same segments contributed approximately 72.6% (U.S. & Canada), 14.2% (EMEA), 8.2% (APEC), and 5.0% (Greater China) of the $3.690 billion total. Caribbean & Latin America is an operating segment but is not separately reportable; its results are included in “Unallocated corporate and other.” [25][29][30] [25][29][30]
Company history
J. Willard Marriott and Alice Sheets Marriott began the business in 1927 with a nine-seat root-beer stand in Washington, D.C.; it grew into the Hot Shoppes restaurant chain, which was incorporated in 1929. The company entered the hotel business in 1957, when it opened the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, and changed its name to Marriott Corporation in 1967.[31][32]
Marriott launched the Courtyard hotel brand in 1983. In 1993, Marriott International was spun off from Marriott Corporation, which subsequently became Host Marriott Corporation. Marriott acquired interests in The Ritz-Carlton in 1995 and 1998, and introduced the Autograph Collection in 2010.[31][32][33][34]
Marriott agreed to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2015 and completed the acquisition in 2016. In 2012, Arne Sorenson became CEO, the first person outside the Marriott family to hold the role; after Sorenson’s death in 2021, Anthony Capuano was appointed CEO.[35][36][37][38] [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38]
