LyondellBasell Industries N.V.

Updated

Overview

LyondellBasell Industries N.V. is a global chemicals and plastics company. It converts hydrocarbon feedstocks into plastic resins and chemicals, and develops and licenses production technologies and sells catalysts. Its main products include polyethylene, polypropylene, propylene oxide and other chemical intermediates, as well as engineered plastics and polymer compounds. Its stated purpose is “creating solutions for everyday sustainable living.” [1]

The company has a global presence, with major manufacturing facilities in the Americas and Europe and a broader network spanning 30 countries and 127 locations. In 2025, it reported $30.2 billion in sales and other operating revenues and employed approximately 18,970 people at year-end.[8] [1]

Products & services

LyondellBasell produces polyethylene in high-density (HDPE), low-density (LDPE) and linear low-density (LLDPE) grades, as well as polypropylene homopolymers and copolymers. These polymers are used in applications including packaging, housewares, construction materials and automotive components. Its specialty polymer offerings include Catalloy polypropylene and polybutene-1. In 2024, polyethylene accounted for 19% of consolidated revenue, polypropylene for 16%, and olefins and co-products for 10%.[12]

Its chemicals portfolio includes propylene oxide and derivatives used to make polyols, propylene glycol and glycol ethers; intermediate chemicals such as styrene monomer and acetyls; and gasoline blend components including MTBE and ETBE. Oxyfuels and related products accounted for approximately 13% of consolidated revenue in 2024. Its advanced polymer offerings include polypropylene compounds, engineered plastics, masterbatches, engineered composites, colors and powders, with polypropylene compounds used substantially in automotive applications.[17]

The company also supplies mechanically recycled, advanced-recycling-based and bio-circular polymers under its Circulen portfolio. Beyond materials, it licenses polyethylene and polypropylene production processes, including Lupotech, Hostalen ACP, Spheripol and Spherizone; sells polyolefin catalysts; and provides licensees with project assistance, training, start-up help and technical support.[22] [12]

Geographic presence

LyondellBasell’s principal manufacturing facilities are concentrated in the United States and Europe. Its listed U.S. sites include several in Texas, as well as facilities in Iowa, Illinois, Louisiana and New Jersey. Listed European sites are in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France. The company has executive offices in Houston, Rotterdam, London and Hong Kong; Hong Kong serves as its Asia-Pacific headquarters. It also has technical-support centers in Rotterdam, Mumbai, Poznań and Shanghai.[28][29]

At year-end 2025, the United States accounted for $14.55 billion of the company’s $20.25 billion in long-lived assets. Germany accounted for $2.01 billion, the Netherlands $830 million and Italy $496 million; the geographic asset disclosure also identifies Mexico, France, Poland, China and Thailand.[30][31] The company reports sales for its Olefins & Polyolefins businesses separately as Americas and Europe, Asia and International: their 2025 sales to customers were $7.67 billion and $9.61 billion, respectively. These are business-segment figures, not a breakdown of total company sales by customer location.[32][33] [28]

Business segments

LyondellBasell reports five business segments. Olefins and Polyolefins–Americas (O&P–Americas) and Olefins and Polyolefins–Europe, Asia and International (O&P–EAI) each produce and market olefins, co-products, polyethylene and polypropylene; they account for approximately 25% and 32%, respectively, of 2025 revenue from external customers.[2] Intermediates and Derivatives (I&D), at approximately 30%, produces propylene oxide and derivatives, oxyfuels, and intermediate chemicals including styrene monomer and acetyls.[4][32]

Advanced Polymer Solutions (APS), at approximately 11%, supplies materials including polypropylene compounds, engineered plastics, masterbatches and engineered composites.[5][32] Technology, at approximately 2%, licenses chemical and polyolefin process technologies and sells polyolefin catalysts.[6][32] These shares use external-customer revenue rather than segment revenue that includes intersegment sales. Refining, which appeared as a separate segment in the 2024 reporting, is not among the five segments in the 2025 reporting.[32][34] [2]

Company history

LyondellBasell traces its history through two principal predecessors. Lyondell Petrochemical Corporation was incorporated in 1985 and acquired ARCO Chemical in 1998. Separately, BASF and Shell combined their polyolefins businesses to form Basell in 2000; an affiliate of Access Industries acquired Basell in 2005.[35]

Basell and Lyondell Chemical completed their merger in December 2007, creating LyondellBasell Industries. Following Chapter 11 filings that began in January 2009, the business emerged from reorganization in April 2010 with LyondellBasell Industries N.V. as its successor company. In 2018, it acquired A. Schulman, expanding its plastics compounding operations.[39] [40]
