Overview

Lufthansa Group is an international aviation group operating in the airline and aviation-services sectors. Its businesses include passenger airlines, logistics and cargo, aircraft maintenance and repair, and other aviation-related services. In its passenger-airline business, the Group includes network and point-to-point carriers; Lufthansa Airlines is one of its network airlines.[1][2] The Group says its purpose is to connect people, cultures and economies in a sustainable way.[3]

Its global reach is reflected in a summer 2026 schedule of more than 14,000 weekly connections to 330 destinations in around 100 countries.[4] Lufthansa Group reported 2025 revenue of €39.597 billion; for the six months ended 30 June 2026, it reported revenue of €19.887 billion and 103,305 employees.[5][6] [1]

Products & services

Lufthansa Airlines’ long-haul cabin product, Allegris, spans First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy. First Class offers private suites with closable doors and beds over two metres long; Business has five seat options, including a suite and an extra-long bed. Premium Economy features a hard-shell seat, leg rest and 99 cm seat pitch, while Economy offers options including 13.3-inch 4K screens and Bluetooth connectivity; features and availability vary by aircraft. Lufthansa has reported Allegris unit revenues 12% above its classic product, and targeted the new product for roughly half of its intercontinental fleet by the end of 2026.[7]

The airline sells European Economy fares named Light, Comfort and Flex, as well as Business; baggage, seat selection, rebooking and other inclusions depend on fare conditions. Onboard services include class-dependent food and beverages, entertainment and FlyNet connectivity. Its Future Onboard Experience programme updates in-flight services and processes across long-haul cabins.[13]

Other Lufthansa Group product and service offerings include Lufthansa Cargo’s priority and standard-speed shipping products, specialist transport for live animals, pharmaceuticals and perishables, and Lufthansa Technik’s aircraft, engine and component maintenance, repair, overhaul, engineering, spare-parts and modification services. Miles & More provides a loyalty programme through which members earn and redeem miles and access status benefits; Lufthansa’s digital services include booking management, flight updates, check-in and travel documents.[18]

For the six months ended 30 June 2026, Lufthansa Group reported passenger-business traffic revenue of €13.659 billion and cargo traffic revenue of €2.089 billion. Lufthansa Technik recorded revenue of €4.428 billion, of which 78% came from external, non-Group business. These are business-level figures rather than product-level splits; the report does not provide revenue percentages by cabin class or fare product.[30] [12]

Geographic presence

Lufthansa Group’s passenger network spans Europe, North, Central and South America, Asia/Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Its principal passenger hubs are Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna and Brussels. In the 2025 summer timetable, the Group served 313 destinations; its published schedule described more than 12,000 weekly connections to over 300 destinations in more than 100 countries.[34]

For FY2025, reported traffic and other revenue totaled €39,597 million. Europe accounted for €21,440 million of traffic revenue and €2,579 million of other revenue; North America €6,032 million and €2,244 million; Central and South America €648 million and €306 million; Asia/Pacific €3,166 million and €1,448 million; the Middle East €442 million and €448 million; and Africa €597 million and €247 million. Calculated as each region’s combined traffic and other revenue divided by the reported total, the approximate regional shares were Europe 60.7%, North America 20.9%, Asia/Pacific 11.7%, Central and South America 2.4%, the Middle East 2.2%, and Africa 2.1%.[38]

At year-end 2025, the Group reported 103,255 employees. Its regional presentation allocated 67,091 to Germany, 27,690 to other Europe, 4,760 to Asia/Pacific, 2,723 to North/Central America, 226 to South America, and 765 to Middle East/Africa. The report also presents a separate country allocation, noting that country allocation is based on corporate headquarters rather than employee deployment.[39] Lufthansa Cargo reported cargo hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Brussels and Rome; its road feeder service covered over 115 European destinations.[42] [34]

Business segments

Lufthansa’s 2026 Q1 reporting presents four operating segments, following a change at the start of 2026 that split Passenger Airlines into Network Airlines and Point-to-Point Airlines. The figures below are each line’s share of the Group’s €8,746 million in external revenue for the quarter; percentages are approximate and may not sum exactly due to rounding.[43][44]

Network Airlines comprises Lufthansa Airlines (including Discover and regional airlines), SWISS (including Edelweiss), Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and ITA Airways; it generated €5,531 million, or approximately 63.3%, of external revenue.[45][44] Point-to-Point Airlines comprises Eurowings, Eurowings Holidays and the investment in SunExpress; it generated €481 million, or approximately 5.5%.[46][44]

Logistics, principally Lufthansa Cargo and related logistics activities, generated €863 million, or approximately 9.9%. MRO, covering Lufthansa Technik’s maintenance, repair and overhaul activities, generated €1,762 million, or approximately 20.2%.[2][44] Additional Businesses and Group Functions—reported alongside the four operating segments—includes service companies such as Lufthansa Aviation Training, Lufthansa Systems and Lufthansa Industry Solutions, as well as Group Functions; it generated €109 million, or approximately 1.2%.[47][44] [43]

Company history

Lufthansa’s history began with the formation of Deutsche Luft Hansa AG on 6 January 1926 through the merger of Deutscher Aero Lloyd and Junkers Luftverkehr; its first scheduled flights departed Berlin on 6 April that year. The original airline ceased operations in 1945 and was not the legal predecessor of today’s company. The legal foundation for the present Deutsche Lufthansa AG was laid in 1953; it took the Lufthansa name in 1954 and resumed flight operations on 1 April 1955.[48][49]

Lufthansa entered the jet age with the Boeing 707 in 1960 and introduced the Boeing 747 in 1970, beginning Frankfurt–New York 747 service that April. In 1997, it became a private company and co-founded Star Alliance. Its subsequent expansion included integrating SWISS from 2005, Austrian Airlines joining in 2009, and taking a stake in Brussels Airlines. In January 2025, Lufthansa finalized a 41% stake in ITA Airways.[50] [48]
